I am thinking about picking up a Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Special.

Played one the other day, I loved the feel and the sound.

For a while I was saving to purchase a new guitar. I had kind of assumed that I would pick up the 2012 Am Standard Strat with the Fat 50's pickups. I like that guitar a lot, and those pickups add a ton of character to some of the slower bluesy stuff that I play. I was either going to get the Standard or find a Tele Deluxe with the Wide Range pickups on it to play. (I still hadn't played those pickups, but every video I watch with those pickups gets a great rock tone.)

For the heck of it, I grabbed a Mustang Special off of the shelf and started noodling around. I was surprised at how much I love the shorter scale guitar, and those pickups are amazing. I got home and started learning more about it and realized that they are wide range humbuckers, like the deluxe.

I played it through 2 different amps and it sounded really amazing.

It's been a week since I played it and I can't get it out of my mind. I'm heading back tonight to play it again.

I'd love to hear what any of you think of it. If you own one, I'd love to hear about how it's working out for you.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Mike

I like mine -- there's a lot of tone flexibility although I find the overall tone to be a bit "thin" if that makes sense. Very fast neck, particularly for smaller hands. The other major point is that it's very light. I have an old (73) Mustang for comparison and they're a lot heavier than the Pawn Shop models. Shape aside, there's not a lot of comparison in sound either if your goal is to duplicate an original Mustang.

The switches follow the Mustang concept of a variety of tones available. However, I found the pickups to more resemble a Les Paul clone with low output humbuckers I once had. At lower volumes, I find the PS Mustang to be very clean and crisp but it didn't make it for me at rock-like volumes (person taste of course).

I've played one a couple of times now, and I am really hoping to buy one. I am looking to find one used, but it doesn't seem that there are a ton out there.

Funny enough, I found a used one on the Guitar Center website that is actually located at the store closest to me. They were asking 649 for it. They also have a new one at the store that is on sale for 799. I found another used one at another GC not too far away for 449, so I emailed my local store and asked them if they would discount their used one to get closer to that price.

Their response was hilarious. They said that there was zero room to move on the used one. But he told me to call him and he could give me a deal on the new one. I called and asked how much they could discount the new one. He said that he could sell it for 649. The same price as the used one that they can't discount even a dollar. How weird is that?

I'm still just chilling out and waiting for a used one to come my way.
