Hi All

I have made an observation about the neck bow on some Fender guitars and would like to know if anyone else can confirm what I have seen. I have a Jazzmaster with a TrussRod adjustment at the Heel of the neck, and no matter how straight or bowed I make it there is an inherrant or "default" minute up bow at about the 17th Fret which I cannot get rid of. I went to my local Guitar store and looked at all the USA/MIM/JAPANESE Strats and Teles and could not find ones with a Heel Truss rod adjustment. And all those necks with headstock truss adjusters were dead straight above the 17th Fret. I found a mustang with a heel truss rod adjuster and it too had a slight up bow above the 17th Fret.

So my observation is that the Heel trussrod adjusted necks are prone to a very small upbow above the 17th fret. Can anyone confirm this for me. Also can anyone with a Strat or Tele that has a Heel trussrod adjuster confirm or opose this theory?

Any insight is appreciated.

Every one of my Fender instruments (nine Strats, one Jazz Bass) has the heel-adjust truss rod and none of them have any "bow" at the 17th fret.

Thanks Arjay, was this observation from memory or did you actualy take a very close look down each neck after you read my post? Once again I will stress that it is very slight and can easily be missed if your necks are setup with an intended light up bow.
Also I have a rosewood fretboard if that even has any impact on this at all. Are some of your guitars rosewood Arjay?
If all your guitars are actualy as you say then I must look further into what could be causing it on mine.

Has anyone else got anything to add?

I walked three meters to my guitar room and inspected them all......

Nothing escapes my eye when it comes to my guitars.

None have any "bow" at the 17th fret, whether rosewood or maple.

Neck should never have a bow at 17 th fret with any kind of truss rod.

I would think that is where the neck would take the most strain, as it bolts on to the body after the 17th Fret, and the string tension is acting entirely on that joining point. I may just be PIXEL PEEPING and extremely critical of my setups, but I do remember seing that on my other non fender guitars too. I could just be over analysing anyway as the "bow" I imagine to see does not affect my setup and playing.

I think he needs a Gretsch Country Gentleman to round things out.

There is a condition where the neck comes up about the 17th fret and causes the string to fret out when playing on the previous few frets. I think it occurs on cheaper guitars mainly. I bet the Director of the Museum knows what it is. I forgot. :?
