okay, i've never owned a JM before but i'm seriously considering getting a squier vintage modified one really soon.... my question is how replacable are the pickups? i understand they're a little different than normal humbuckers?.... could i throw just any old humbuckers in there? not that i have anything specific in mind... just curious if there's a major size difference.... thanks for any info in advance.

The pickups on those guitars are not humbuckers. They are JazzMaster Singlecoils, but they are replaceable with other types of jazzmaster single coil style pickups. You can modify it for Humbuckers if that is wahat is prefered.

They are not humbuckers, but single coils. You can put ANY type of pickup in ANY guitar (unless it is active, in which case battery pack is needed), as long as you make the hole-size right. Good luck!

thanks, ended up getting it for a few days, disliking the sound, and decided to exchange for a surf strat instead of spending more money on pickups. i do still want to get another JM someday, maybe the fender J mascis. i really dig that purple beast.

Remember JM pickups are much shallower and don't have pickup "ears" so you will probably have to route the pickup routes deeper to get Humbuckers to fit, especially where the pickup ears are depending what kind of routing the guitar has.
