I played 3 Jaguars today. The first one was a 50th Anniversary model. The second was a Kurt Cobain Jaguar. The third one was a Jaguarillo. I liked the Cobain the best (even though I don't care for the road worn treatment,) the Jaguarillo second, and the 50th Annivesary the least. The Jaguarillo had the tremolo bar in it, so I got to play with a floating tremolo. It allowed more pitch change than I expected, and I could almost dive bomb with it a little. The 50th Anniversary was in LPB but had a ding in it and when the light hit it a certain way, the finish wasn't smooth on the front. It played OK and sounded good, but it wasn't worth the money. The Cobain Jaguar sounded nasty and was fun to play with its smooth neck. The 50th Anniversary was $1750, the Cobain was $1250 (and Made in Mexico, which surprised me) while the Jaguarillo was more reasonable at $800. None of them were worth the money. My $400 Marauder plays as well or better than any of them did. I played a Japanese Jaguar a while back that was heavenly, and a long time ago I played a pre-CBS Jaguar which was awesome. These would be nice guitars for $500, but they're way overpriced. I want a Jaguar, but I may have to wait unless the Squier VM Jaguars are really nice.

Hi bugo,

I am a Jag fan also. See if you can find locally a Johnny Marr signature Jag to try. It is definitely different than other Jags, and I think JM really put a lot of thought and energy into his Jag, and I liked all his changes. Bought the JM particularly for the surf tones that come from the #2 pickup toggle position (both pickups in parallel).

Although from what seems to be your current price range from your post below the JM is a lot of $, in the $1600 - to $1700 range. If you like it, start looking for used ones. Look down the page in this "Other Fender guitars" section for JM Jag threads (there are at least 2). Some of the JM buyers have been unhappy, but I have had no trouble with mine.

Regards, Craig H

I forgot to mention that the 50th Anniversary Jaguar had a wavy finish on the front of the guitar that was visible if the light hit it a certain way. I would expect better quality on a $100 Squier, much less on a $1750 guitar.

I'm gonna guess that the guitar you saw was an anomaly. My 50th is flawless...well was before I got my mitts on it.

bugo,

I don't know if you remember me from other posts, but I also have a Marauder in LPB. I've also been interested in getting a Jaguar. I love the Johnny Marr Jaguar, but it's just too expensive for me. A friend of mine recently purchased a used Fender Classic Player Jazzmaster from a local music shop, and it's a great guitar. I've been researching the Classic Player Jaguar Specials, and they seem like great guitars for the price. They're made in Mexico, but they've gotten great reviews, and most people seem to be impressed with the quality. I'm keeping my Marauder, but I might get a Classic Player Jaguar Special HH for my next guitar. It has humbuckers, but you can switch between the humbuckers and single coils, so you get a lot of variety tone wise. Unfortunately, none of the guitar stores in my area keep them in stock, so, like the Marauder, I'd have to order one of them "sight unseen."

I have been really, really happy with my CP HH Jag. I have had it for several years now.

I have a MIM Classic Player Jaguar Special in CAR and it is flawless. It's not as good as my CS 62 NOS Jag, but it also cost a lot less. I've had zero problems with the Classic Player. Nice finish, stays in tune, plays great.

I have a MIM CP Jag. I recently put some Curtis Novak pups in it and removed the claws. It has leapfrogged my MIA Tele and is now my second favorite guitar.

My first good guitar was a Jag purchased in a pawn shop in 1975. Reluctantly had to sell it a few years later, broke, going to college on GI bill

Next Jag a MIJ HH. Very heavy. Replaced pickups with Lindy Fralin's P-92s. Incredible tone machine

NOw to bring things full circle, just got a 50th anniversary in Burgundy Mist metallic. This particular guitar is beautiful. Set up by great independent local shop where I bought it.

Each Jag has been unique and each sounded incredible. Jags are great guitars. Wish the Classic Players were still available, would like to try one of those

I wish Fender made a Standard Jaguar and a Standard Jazzmaster. If they can make a fairly accurate $300 VM Squier, then they can make a $500 Standard.

Classic Player Jaguar Special and Special HH are both still available. Very popular models.

I'm sure they're very nice (I've never played one) but they're not exactly affordable. Why doesn't Fender make Mexican-made Standard Jaguars and Standard Jazzmasters? They would sell like hotcakes, especially if they came in a nice selection of colors. A Surf Green Standard Jazzmaster would be awesome.

I guess you mean something between this http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/squier-vintage-modified-jaguar-electric-guitar and the Classic Player?

Yes. I have a Mexican Standard HSS Strat and a Standard Tele. They are great, great guitars. The VM Squiers are nice, but the Mexicans are in a whole other league. If they can make the VM for $300, don't tell me they couldn't build a Mexican Standard for $500.

+1

True, my Classic Player was perfect out of the box. Flawless! I know they can make one and price it at $499.99 but will they?
