I am having problems with my brand new Mustang guitar. It buzzes and has static like noise unless I keep my fret hand on the strings at all times.

The pickups are splitable but I get the same buzzing problem when the pickups are set to humbucking.

I had a similar problem with my Fender Jaguar HH but only through a loud half stack and I figured it was because of the unpotted dragster pickups.

Any ideas on what the problem might be with the Mustang? thanks

It's the nature of plastic pickguards that sit flat on a guitar body. Teles and Strats can also have the same problem.

It's not single coil hum. It also has nothing to do with grounding.

It's annoying, but it's also perfectly normal.

Here's an easy fix.

Have you held a 2011 Pawn Shop Mustang in your hands?

Yes. More then once.

I've also held, played, sold and repaired 100's of guitars.

Have you tried roughing up the back of the PG? I've seen it work more then once including teles and strats.

You can use copper tape on the back and do the same thing...break the contact between the PG and the body. The fact that it also helps shield the guitar from stary RF is a bonus but not the reason it fixes the problem.

Why can you generate static by rubbing a balloon on a pant leg or by shuffling across a rug in wool socks? Is it because the balloon and socks aren't grounded properly? Or is it because of how static is generated? You need to stop the static from being generated.

So is it the pickguard, grounding, guitar design, or a combination causing problems?
