Hi, got a 1959 Fender Duo-Sonic (max 1960 since it's a rosewood/slabboard neck).
Anyway, the color is darkblue...? Like dark midnightblue!
No info on the net about it..... but I think they did custom colors if the customer ordered.
It sure looks like originalpaint and under a small damage the groundcolor is dark red, there is only 2 layers then the wood.
Anyone seen a similar? /Middlehand

Without pics can't say for sure, but can say, that no color of that type was on Fenders color charts back then...and it would be Extremely odd for a student model guitar to recieve a custom finish back then. My guess its probably an older refin...post those pics and we can give you a more difinitive answer.

+1

Early Duo-Sonics were finished in Desert Sand while the later issues were painted Dakota Red, Olympic White, or Sonic Blue.

Likely, the instrument depicted in the pics left Fullerton in Dakota Red.

I viewed you pics. No way is that the original finish. Sorry! But it's still a good guitar and I personally wouldn't care about the finish if it was done professionally and looked good :) If the guitar was refinished 40+ years ago, I'd just leave it alone.
