I have just purchased a Johnny Marr Jaguar - fantastic guitar, great sounds and marvellous short scale- but I am having problems inserting the whammy bar.

I followed the instructions i.e. 'push very hard' which I did, then I had my son-in-law (a retired middleweight boxer) have a go still no success. I then put the bar in the freezer at -20 deg C for 16 hours and we tried again, still no impression.

I checked the dimensions with a micrometer results as below:

bar 4.92 mm
socket insertion point internal dia. 4.64 mm

Are these correct, if so please arrange for the world's strogest man to attend to carry out the procedure.

Also there is a lot of rattling from the G string when it is set at it's correct intonation - probably the spring.

Are these design faults?

Please advise how to fix these problems.

Many thanks

Hi Greenman,

Please see the main JM Jag topic contained within this forum. I myself had this issue with my first JM Jag that I received early Feb & put it down to early batch poor / non existent set up by Fender.

To secure the the tremolo arm, you're going to have to slacken and remove the strings, remove the tremolo saddle and tighten the locking nut on the tremolo arm so that it compresses the nylon insert & grips the arm. Whilst removing my tremolo I also noticed a loose detached random wire sitting within the recess - possibly a ground wire which should have been bonded to the tremolo? My intonation screw also kept working loose & falling out on my G-string & eventually the paint work started to crack! In summary - a piss poor experience for me! My replacement is like a totally new guitar, with regards to sound and playability.

Looks like Fender are more focused in pushing these things out of the factory quicksmart, rather than providing quality instruments!

Good luck.

The remedy you suggest is not possible as Fender have fitted an AVRI socket to the trem and the supplied bar will not fit, actually it is not possible owing to the dimensions This is down to poor quality control and not the manufacturer of the components. I purchased an old AVRI whammy bar and it is a perfect fit. I also get a problem with the screw falling out, which I understand happened to Johnny whilst on stage - G string intonation screw. You might find that the E strings tend to be too close to the edge of the guitar

This is a very expensive guitar and you would expect Fender to put some effort into it. I am not happy at all and I don't intend to ever buy a new fender again, I will buy vintage Fenders from now on, preferably pre-CBS

Does your tremolo socket have a nylon insert fitted? I've attempted to measure mine but I only have a steel rule & am unable to get that kind of precision. But from what you say, it does sound like a Fender cock-up!

No it doesn't have a Nylon liner to the socket and it is definitely an AVRI. It is definitely a Fender $@!& up and the s**t is on it's way to hit the fan from a very high level. Can't say any-more at this stage but watch this space.

I just posted in the Johnny Marr Jaguar thread about this same exact issue. The vibrato bar won't even go inside the hole, and there doesn't seem to be any sort of visible bushing.

I am pretty disappointed about this, as you are.

I suspect they fitted an AVRI socket instead of the correct one. If you are in the UK I suggest you contact Matt Davey at Fender mdavey@fender.com

It might be worth checking if you can adjust the pickups - see if you can adjust them up and down.

They are very helpful once they are aware of the problem

I am in the U.S.

I sent an email to the general customer service email address. Hopefully I will hear something back soon.

I posted photos of the vibrato arm hole on my Johnny Marr Jaguar in the main Johnny Marr Jaguar thread.

Why might I need to check whether I can adjust the pickups?

Just try to raise or lower the pickup by using the adjustment screws either side of the pickup. The pickup should go up or down without hindrance, my ones get stuck in the scratch plate and won't move. You may need to adjust the height of the pickups depending on how 'hot' you want the response from them (louder or quieter)

Is the saddle cover which came with the guitar in good condition as mine was corroded?

Also check out the intonation screw on the G string as mine falls out, as happened to Johnny Marr when he was performing.

Good luck although I have always found Fender very helpful
