I'm new to the world of guitar models, so bear with me, please.
From what I've read, all Japanese jazzmasters without a "JV" in the model number actually DON'T have real jazzmaster pickups. Is this true? If so, what's the point of them?
Soon I'm gonna be getting a limited edition MIJ Blonde jazzmaster from '94 from a friend and I'm love with the finish. Will it be guitar sacrilege if I rip out the pickups and replace them? (I'm not actually gonna do it myself so don't worry about that).
Thanks in advance!

I have a 2003 MIJ Jazzmaster in Lake Placid Blue (LPB) from what has become known as the "Q-Series". It is a wonderful guitar as far as build quality, playability, even tone. Truth be told, it does not sound exactly like a USA Jazzmaster. The pickups are wound differently, more like a Strat than a Jazzer.

Is it sacrilege to change the pickups? In my opinion, NO, despite the reputation the Q-Series guitars have (and the prices they command) these days. Someday when I can devote the time and attention to the project, I would like to replace the p/u's with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. Let me take this opportunity to recommend them . . .

'Agree with Steve. Personal opinion is you will do the guitar an honour and great service by putting in REAL JM pups.

'Have an MIJ from '95 purchased new, swapped out pickups to Fender AVRI JM and it's a whole new guitar...

...a "real" Jazzmaster. The ones it came with are not "wide to fill the cover," but rather, narrow bobbins, pretty much like MIJ Strat pups.

Yo patrickmanning, I have one of those jazzys! It does have "jazzmaster" pups in it. I think the bridge pup is a bit thin and wimpy, but the neck sure does sound good! For a while, I had a dimarzio DP151 in the bridge and it sounded ok. Don't worry too much what others think about you changing the pups, it's your sound, not theirs. BTW, does she look loke this?
