I have an opportunity to purchase a ’65 Jazzmaster for around $2,000. The guitar sounds great and appears to be mostly original, but I am certainly no expert. The guitar seems to be in fairly good shape with one exception – there is large dark blemish on the back of the body. The original owner is deceased and the person selling the guitar doesn’t know anything about what might have caused the dark spot.
Below are several images of the guitar (hopefully). This is my first post, so I am not sure I’ve done this properly).

I would appreciate any thoughts on the value of this guitar. Thanks.

It's in really good condition for the age. It is probably worth $1500-$2000

unless the guitar is made of wood that dark, why would buckle wear be that colour ? looks to me like somethings been rubbed on it, maybe to try and cure/prevent/treat buckle rash. buckle rash is scratches, scrapes down to the wood, which 99% of the time on a fender is light coloured wood. i dont know my jazzmasters, sorry if it IS mahogonay or something. but if thats standard buckle rash, its like nothing ive seen before.

Don't recall ever seeing white binding on a Jazzmaster before.

I believe the previous owner tried to patch what could have been buckle rash. I'm not sure what he used, but he didn't do a great job.

What looks like binding, is simply automobile pinstriping, which comes off quite easily.

It kinda looks like a burn with all of the dark color. I have a Gibson ES-369 its got buckle rash but dosn't look anything like that. Is it sunk down? or raised? It could also be someone tried to repair the rash but its something i have never seen before. Its still worth around 1500 to 2200. (if it sounds good)

I was able to get this Guitar for $1,900. When I picked it up I was also given the original instruction manual. Feb, 1965 is written under the serial number, I assume this is the purchase date. Hopefully this verifies the authenticity. I will have the the neck date checked when I take it to get set up.
Thanks to everyone for your input and advice. I'll give an update when I get the neck date.

Need to check if pickups and pots are original too . This is a must as neck and body date.

Looks like buckle rash with a dark stain applied over it. As for the "binding" I agree that it looks like auto pinstripe.

Hope the OP gets some better photos out here and some dates, etc... Those were awesome guitars. Top of the line back then.
