My son just bought his first new guitar :D , a Jaguar Modern Player with P-90's. He likes the sound of the PU's, but many of the rooms he plays have buzz issues. Does anyone know the specs, output, etc for these so we can get a noise cancelling P-90 with similar characteristics?

TIA,

Welcome.

The odds are overwhelming that those pickups are of Asian origin where any exacting information on them would be nil. As they are in this context, 'generic', there would be no inclination for anyone to do an in depth analysis on them.

As a species, P-90s are a very basic pickup and as you've already experienced, can be rather noisy in terms of 50/60 cycle hum. Now whether they are imported or American, again, because they are a very basic design, the quality (or lack thereof) of the components which any given one is made of will ultimately influence their final output and tonality. By design of late, oftentimes the bridge pickup in a set is made to be more powerful than its neck pickup counterpart.

In your particular situation, you can look at the numerous pickup manufacturers website offerings for hum cancelling P-90 shaped pickups, listen to their sound bytes (if available) and choose from there. Or, you can install a dummy coil to each pickup which will in turn, radically reduce or outright cancel out each pickup's respective noise/hum. Either way though, you will not get the super wide frequency response of that of an outright single coil.

Thanks, Martian :)

I've had a pretty good luck with the DiMarzio DP169 Virtual P-90's. I replaced the mini HB bridge PU on my old '76 LP Deluxe and I'm looking for a comparable dog-eared model for my 295.

I'll try wrenching the Jag away from him long enough to at least throw a meter on it.
