Epiphone, at one time I think, was a stand alone guitar company, then they were bought by Gibson. At first they sort of operated on their own as a stand alone company/business, with operations in the US. Sometime later, they were more-or-less relegated to offshore operations. There is tons more detail and I'm sure some Gibson historian could fill in the blanks, as well as correct me where I am wrong.
Some older epiphones are way good guitars and may be somewhat valuable from a collectors point of view. There was a time in there where the quality control was not as good as it could be, so if you are considering a purchase, check it out close.
I don't know for sure, but I think the medium to higher end Epiphones today are pretty good guitars, lots of people rave about a tube amp they have with the Epiphone name on it.

Go to www.epiphone.com. I believ Les Paul was working there when he created th"The Log" and Gibson was so takenthey bought the company to get Les Paul. Go to wikipedia.org or com and learn all about it. There is a huge artical there.

Les Paul didn't work for them, but he played them once upon a time.
He used the Epiphone factory at the time to create "The Log"
They were once the top maker of Archtops, and later Gibson bought them and moved the operations to Kalamazoo--both in the same building as some Gibsons and in their own building. Later Gibson used Epiphone as the brand on guitars and basses imported from Asia--a situation that continues today.

Epiphone is to Gibson as Squier is to Fender.

Most Epiphone guitars are not made in the U.S. but in Korea, China, and Japan.

I own several Epiphones; as you can see below.
The latest one is a "Dot" a poor man's "335" purchased at the Crossroads concert in 2004. The others were purchased in preceeding years.
They played great right out of the box; the best player I have is the les paul with the cherry sunburst and bird's eye maple top.
The $100.00 Jr with one pickup was not exactly a good guitar; more for the stop tail style non-adjustable bridge on it than anything else. I installed an adjustable stop tail from allparts.com on it and put ping tuning machines on it not because the Kluson style tuners that came with it were bad but because I had the money and could afford it.
Currently I have 2 Epiphone P-90 pickups awaiting installation; and I need to get the larger pick guard to cover the additional routing for the wires.
My only disappointment in Epiphone is the resale value but I guess when you pay $325.00 (no case) for a Dot $260.00 seens pretty good. I know Fenders and Gibsons loose more than 1/3 the price paid (street price) when offerd in pristeen condition on the used market.
I'm not sure how you formed your opinion; but you might re-consider in the light of Epiphone's Lifetime Warranty to the original owner. If as you say the guitar falls apart make a claim; if you're a subsequent owner maybe you should become more informed about guitars before you buy next time.
Badly abused items are all over the second hand market; such as cars and houses; stereos and TVs. The buyer needs to educate himself as to the pitfalls of selecting Cherries over Lemons so he dosen't buy them.

*sigh*

Played one? Probably not, right? Just cos its cheap and not made in the US doesn't make it crap. Not everyone can afford an expensive guitar, not for their first guitar atleast, so just think before you start flaming. They're reasonable guitars, just like Squiers. They're not going to fall apart or blow up, or something..

While most Epiphones are just cheaper (but still good) copies of Gibson guitars, the Epiphone "Elitist" guitars are almost impossible to tell apart from the originals. At 1/2 to 2/3 the cost. I've played Epiphone "Les Paul" copies, and while they are good learning and practice guitars, they don't have the same sound. But I had a chance to play an Epiphone Elitist Les Paul and frankly I liked it better than the real thing.
