I play a classic player jazzmaster and got sick of breaking my high e strings (.9-.11) that keeps breaking.

So now I went up the gauge and now my high e strings is at .16
I do believe thats a little bit too high, but can that be a problem of why my high e string (.16) keeps breaking? I mainly play sonic youth and alternate different tunings on specific songs.
for instance, i tune it down to a D then to an A# and back to E standard in certain pattern.

just wondering what or which strings is perfect to play in alternating tunings and not having to snap ever? or does steel > nickel wound?

Something wrong with your string saddle that cut the string. or your playing habit ? Did you brake this string on other guitar ? You have other guitar that you play often to test ?

When you are changing to alternate tunings, how fast are you doing it?

The balance of the guitar on the high end can't handle the change in tension if you quickly tune down or up a step or two the way it can with the low E.

Try tuning very slowly and also grab the string and give it a few gentle tugs while you're tuning to take the tension out and you should be able to do alternate tunings without the breakage problem, that is if the string is breaking primarily while you're tuning.

This is what I would suspect. Are the strings breaking down at the saddle? If so, it may have to be smoothed out a bit. Perhaps all the tuning and retuning is causing the string to "saw" back and forth over a burr.

Maybe take a little piece of 220 grit sandpaper, fold it in half, and try to smooth out the cut in your E-string saddle.

Of course if it's breaking elsewhere, there could be another cause. Are you bashing the strings when you play?

a rub with #2 pencil lead in the e string slot of the saddle works wonders.

If the saddle cut the string , pencil lead won't do the job for long time , better to sand as cormorant write. Or mini file....

i wouldn't think the saddle is the problem breaking my string.
i mean if it were, why is it that every time i break a string it breaks off near the tuners?

another thing i wanted to point out was the tuners.
am i the only one who think the classic player tuners are hard to put in strings?
i mean you have to insert the string deep inside the post and somehow make it wrap around the sole. I'm not talking about inserting the strings horizontally through the hole, this jazzmaster has a tuner you insert VERTICALLY and pretty ridiculous to install on a thinner string. its hard to explain it, but i think they're called "vintage style tuners". just google it and it might looks familiar.
but then again when i read it off as "vintage style" i nearly fell in love with it...

Why you did not say that before ? Sure it is not the saddle.

I never heard about these vintage tuner brake the string . I have 3 guitars with them .
Is your tuner's hole is defective ?

I have three Jaguars with vintage tuners and don't have that problem.

I agree, the E and B strings can be tricky to place in the tuners, but you get used to it.

You may be installing the strings wrong, because it's really pretty easy. Lop a few inches off the string to get rid of the excess, stick the end of the string into the hole, bend it down into the slot, and hold the string down tight in the slot while you wind the key. The slot grabs the string as you wind, and you just have to keep pressure on the string until it's taut. You only want four or five winds, and they should be nice and neat, looking like the coils on a spring, and not overlapping each other.

If this is how you're already doing it, then I'm stumped, and you may want to let a luthier look at it.

Are you sure it's not breaking at the nut? Could be a burr or something.

IMO nut is to soft to cut string and no edge to cut string

What the Bird Man says, you should not break .016s as high E...unless maybe they don't like to be tuned "effectively" way up that much.

.016 is a G 3rd on super light stringing, quite a lot less tension.

Glad to find another Sonic Youth fan here. :)

I don't think you can go from A# up to normal E with one string gauge. I can't imagine the .016 can handle D, much less E. You need a second Jazzmaster. :)

I have one Jazzmaster with more or less normal string gauges for Thurston-style tunings, like CGDGCD, and another with Lee's GGDDGG and related tunings. On the latter I use two "A" strings, then two "D" strings, then two "G" strings. The two "G" strings are either .016 or .017 depending on what I can scrounge up. :) I just recently discovered these weird tunings and string gauges on the Sonic Youth website. Fun!

I'm not discounting the other comments and suggestions, you could have a problem with your bridge or nut. Have a good guitar tech check it out for you.

Hope you can get your problem resolved so you can have fun with this!

Smooth out the underside of the string trees with a piece of fine sandpaper. I doubt the actual tuners are breaking your strings.
