How does a standard single coil Jag pickup compare to other Fender pickups? How closely related is it to a Strat pickup?

it's not overly strat-like at all.. i can't accurately describe it cause mine are in a Cyclone, which doubtlessly has different sound than a Jag, but they SEEM to be higher output with a lot less noise. it might just be the lack of noise that makes them seem louder though, since you can crank them up more without worry.
beyond that though, i really can't say, since mine aren't in the 'right' guitar. but for me personally, swapping them out for strat pickups would feel like a major downgrade.

Real Jaguar (Fender USA) pickups are unique in the same way Texas Specials and Fender Noiseless and '62 Ressue Strat ones are.

Jaguar pickups are their own animal. They sound like Jaguar pickups.

Listen closely to some recordings where the Fender USA Jaguar is featured, you will understand (and make sure you take the amp into consideration).
(Very old Beach Boys, Challengers and modern Slacktone come to immediate mind)

Just an FYI, the original '62 Jag pups were hotter than the Strat pups of the time. They still are hotter than the standard Strat pups. These hotter pups coupled with the 1 meg ohm volume/tone pots help to give both the Jazzmaster and Jaguar their unique sound.

Volume and tone both Audio Taper in Jaguar
Volume 1 meg Linear Taper, Tone= 1 meg Audio Taper in Jazzmaster.
