Hi All -

So i just inherited an orginal 1957 Fender Musicmaster (all original parts w/ original case) from my grandfather. It is in pretty beatup shape. Was curious if anyone could recommend what products to use to clean and potentially a replacement pickup and/or if anyone has experience with adding a 2nd pickup (will this reduce value)?

does anyone know the potential value?

This is my first Fender and any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Adding a second pickup (or any other "invasive" mod) will reduce the value to a collector. That said, remove your pickguard and take a look beneath. Many Musicmaster bodies were routed as per a Duo-Sonic (with a second pickup rout and accommodations for a selector switch on the lower horn). If yours is one of these you can easily make a two-pickup Duo-sonic clone by adding the second pickup, a switch, and a Duo-Sonic pickguard. Do not modify any of the guitar's original parts. As for a replacement pickup (and another for the two-pickup mod), I would have the original pickup re-wound by Curtis Novak and buy one of his repro Mustang pickups.

The value as sits is probably around 1500 to 1750 depending on how it looks. However if you do add a pickup it could decrease to around 1000 unless that person wants a second pickup or isn't a collector looking for an all original. Keep all the original parts because if you decide to sell it you can put it back the way it was. . If i were you i would keep it how it is!
