Hi there,

Just purchased my dream guitar. USA JAGUAR 62 reissue. Picked it up from the shop yesterday and I think the action is really high, the shop say this is how Jags come. I borrowed a Japanese Jag for a recording session, which played like a dream with a very low action. That's what lead me to shell out on a proper one.

The top strings seem high on the nut......shop people didn't think so. They also say the mute saddle makes it high and that can be removed.

Before anyone starts messing with my baby, I thought I'd ask you chaps/ladies and see what you thought. Do any defective gtrs slip through the net now and again?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Many new guitars including high dollar ones come with poorly cut nuts. Jags do not by default have to have high action. Get a new tech. If it's the people at the shop you bought it from, go elsewhere. Of course they'll tell you nothing is wrong, they just want your money and for you to go away.

The MIM Classic Player Jaguar I played at the weekend was perfect and I do like a really low action with not the slightest fret buzz unplugged. My own Blacktop Jaguar is similar .

Factory set-ups are often terrible. Lots of people who work in guitar shops are totally clueless. I do set-ups and mods for a few of my friends that work in a guitar shop. They're great players, know all about guitar models/value etc but they're clueless about tech/set-up stuff.

The shop telling you that it's just the way they are is the classic lazy clerk scenario.

"How they come"and what they need to be to fit your style are 2 different things. I do not think I have bought a guitar that did not need to be set up for me. Nut height, bridge height, truss rod/relief are all in need of a tweak for personal style. Some of the bolt necks may need a shim as well.

I have a 62 RI and a 50th anniversary and both have excellent set up. Of course, they came through a CS Showcase Dealer and their tech gave them both a good going over before I got hold of them.

Sam Ash and Guitar Center are the worst and a lot of them try to charge for the setup that the smaller shops do for free. The small shop really, really wants you to come back and buy from them again.

Clearly, it is time to find a COMPETENT tech.

Clearly!

Somebody that would like to remain in business. We used to have a guy around here who was a great guitar tech and amp tech. But he also charged almost list price from picks and straps and other accessories.

I often think that if his gear and accessory prices had been more in line with the competition, he would still be in business. His "work" may have been far above others, but the stuff he sold was the same as everyone else. But he tried to put boutique prices on everything.
