Hey guys! I recently purchased a Fender Squire of a friend of mine. I noticed on the back it says it was crafted in indonesia. What can you tell me about this guitar. Also it says "affinity series" on it. the Serial # on the back of the neck is IC041027507.

is this a decent guitar?

Sorry to say they are pretty much the bottom of the barrel but their price reflects that I think. Not that they can't be decent playable guitars but they're pretty much the cheapest of the cheap.

The Squier Classic Vibe Series on the other hand are excellent guitars.

i have to let yo know that the affinity strat would make a MIM,and the vibe series.also,they're very far from being the CHEAPEST OF THE CHEAP.

indeed it far exceeds decent.i own a 1999 affinity strat and i've only replaced strings and i put a strap lock on it.be cautious when asking questions about your squier guitar.the folks that have paid anywhere from 450.00-600.00 and up for their guitars will tell you that,the squier isn't even MADE by FENDER,while actually it certainly is MADE by FENDER.not all who own expensive guitars are like this tho.some squier owners will do extensive MODS,right down to the fender decal on the head stock.i've seen somewhere this is not legal,but who knows.myself,i have no plans to mod my guitar especially the SQUIER LOGO on the head stock!bottom line,if your guitar is a good fit for you,then don't pay any heed to anyone who knocks your "SQUIER AFFINITY STRAT".enjoy your guitar dude.later.

I have a white Affinity Fender Squire made in China in 2000 this is the guitar I taught myself to play on I upgraded the Pick ups by fitting Gold Lace ones and it plays and sounds great and I still use it to learn new songs on.
I have short fat fingers and the slim neck helps. So I wouldn't right them off as being sub standard in any way.

Not trying to knock anyone's guitar. I have guitars ranging from $300 to $2000. For me it's not about the name on the headstock or how much it costs. I buy guitars that I like. I assumed the OP was asking where the Affinitys fall in the Fender lineup. They are (almost) the most entry level guitar they make.

FWIW the Squiers are in fact not made by Fender directly. Fender contracts the work out to various factories in China, Indonesia, etc. You won't find a Fender factory like you would in Corona or Ensenada. I'm not trying to be a snob or justify my own pricer purchases. In fact the quality on my CV is in some respects as good as my US made guitars. I have worked on Affinitys before. I find the fretwork lacking, the hardware quality low and the general fit and finish poor. They are also very inexpensive so it all depends on what you expect and what you are willing to pay. They certainly fill a need but they are what they are. Fairly decent budget level instruments. Having said all that, it boils down to what works for you.

this is response to chip?there are some fine examples of the affinity series strats.i HAPPEN to have one.i've put a strap lock kit,and of course,i change my strings regulary.do you think that JIMI HENDRIX walked out of MANNY'S with some sort of ULTRA STRAT in 1967-68?he walked out of mannys with the same electronics that are on my affinity.single coil pups,tuners,bridge,etc.this sound is CLASSIC stratocaster.JIMI like everyone else,achieved his sound thru his amps.i have a 96 american strat,and a mim strat year unknown.i enjoy playing the affinity due to the sound,and the feel.you say the fit and finish is poor?i don't find any on my strat.last but not least,this affinity IS made by fender.carries the SAME WARRANTY as my mia.ADMIT it man,it's okay,your a equipment snob.the bottom line is always this,if your guitar feels good,PLAY IT. I'm not an equipment snob by any means. Not that I really need to explain myself to you but I have 4 electric guitars at the moment and only 1 is a US Fender. Two I built myself and 1 is a Squier. Comparing Jimi's guitar to an Affinity is ridiculous. You could give him a Kleenex box with rubber bands on it and he'd outplay all of us. I understand there are good, cheap guitars and if you love it who am I to disagree? The fact remains Fender doesn't build Squiers, they pay someone else to then back it with their name and warranty.

As crazy as it is to assert you have to pay thousands to get a good guitar, it's equally nuts to claim a $200 Squier is as good as a US made Fender. It'll get you by and as long as you love it, that's cool. No need to start making accusations about snobbery though.

Chinese & Taiwanese Squiers

YN: Y = Yako (Taiwan), N = Nineties (1990s), the first number following the serial number prefix is the year.

For example

"YN5" = made by Yako in 1995.

CY: C = China, Y = Yako (Taiwan), the serial number prefix is followed by a 2 number year.

For example

"CY97" = made by Yako in 1997.

CY, COS, or COB serials are usually used on Crafted in China Squiers. Some Chinese made Gretsch guitars also have a CY serial number.

Miscellaneous Chinese serials: CD, CT, CJ, NC: C = China, the first number following the serial number prefix is the year. Probably made by Yako (Taiwan). The plant from which the COB serial number prefix models originate remains a mystery. No documentation, or comment from the manufacturer has resolved the question of which plant produced them.

Some Squiers that are sold only in the Chinese and Asian markets are made by Axl in China, these guitars usually have the serial number starting with CXS; with the 'X' standing for 'Axl'.

Squier Classic Vibe series guitars/basses serial numbers start with CG. e.g. CGSxxxxxxx

You post is mostly unintelligible, however;

I didnt say they were crappy. They ARE (almost) Fender's lowest model. Also they aren't made by Fender. Just trying to help you get your facts straight. If you would take the time to read, you'd understand that.
