I think I like 9's better on the short scale Mustang guitars. Here's why : I replaced the 9's on mine because it felt too slinky, so I went to 10's hoping it would also bring out a little more tone. The tone difference is debatable, but I don't like the 10's on the narrow, vintage fret wire. It has a harsh feel when fretting now, and not because of the action. Next string swap I will be going back to 9's because the 9's suit the narrow frets better I think. Maybe if it were fretted with medium jumbo fret wire........

short scale, i always go with 10s. 9s will just get bent out of tune at any amount of chord work cause they're like spaghetti on any scale shorter than 24.75". maybe that's nothing to a lot of people, but i do a lot of chord work... my hands aren't fast enough to arpeggiate a chord and compensate for the detuning that happens from merely fretting a string that's looser on the neck

I've always used 9's on my Mustang, and I play full chords, barre chords, power chords, double stops, single notes--I play with vibrato in my fingers, and sometimes the bar.
I have no problem staying in tune.

Could be my touch, the strings I use (Normally GHS Boomer--but sometimes SuperBullets)

I just prefer the feel of 9-42.

Of course, someone else's hands and technique and ears being different, you may prefer a different gauge.

yeah, i'm completely self-taught, so my touch is probly comparable to using dynamite to open the jelly.
i thought i'd said something about "It's all personal preference" in my post, but i guess i didn't... oops XD

10s - I owned a jag-stang since 96 and always played with 9s, I've played with 9s my whole life on all electric guitars ive owned (bar some 10s on a strat once - which i didnt get on with) until i got my mustang. It came shipped with 10s and i love them. It might be a short scale thing but they suit me fine. They take a little longer to bed in then 9s but once they have had a couple hours play they are juicy!

On a short scale guitar like the stang or jag, 11s rule. 11s on these are the tension equivalent of 10s on a strat or tele. Anything lighter causes intonation problems no matter the bridge adjustment. Few great players would use anything less than 10s on a strat/tele. IMO, less is a learning tool, not a performance choice. But that said, it's a personal choice. Use what works for you.
