I bought my 1978 Fender Musicmaster (like a mustang) for $350 a little over a year ago... ;) But they usually sell for $700 give or take, and the older ones sell for more. If you could save up just $1500 or so, you have several options on buying real, vintage Fenders. Musicmasters, Mustangs, DuoSonics, even late 1970"s Strats if ya shop around! Also look into the Fender Bullets from the early 1980's (got my USA bullet for $200), and the Fender Lead 1 and Lead II guitars. These are just the more affordable, USA made and truly vintage Fenders. Anything from the late 80's till now really isn't "vintage". If USA isn't of a concern, then the Fender Japan models from the late 80's and 1990's were good quality stuff too.

Mustangs, Musicmasters, Broncos and Duo Sonics are probably your best bet for a vintage guitar. Pretty sure I've seen the odd 'stang go for 800 - 1000 on eBay.

Late 70's Musicmasters will give you the best bang for your buck, they're way better built than most 70s Fenders, the necks are really great in them. I got one a few years ago for £250. They come up at a good price fairly often. They're a great platform for modding too.

They're usually easy to put together from parts too.

Why anybody wants vintage instruments is beyond me. It's one thing if it's a model that's no longer in production, but anything you can still get is just pointless.
