Hey, I'm new here, and sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but how good are the Mustang's pickups (the Classic series '65 reissue)? I'm planning on getting one, and I play lots of punk rock music like NOFX, Rise Against, Bad Religion and The Offspring. I play some Nirvana, too (Yes, I know the Kurt Cobain Mustang is out, but I'd rather not get an artist series). I just wanted to know if those are good pickups for this type of music, or if I should replace the pickups for some humbuckers or something, and what pickups I should get if there is a better choice. Thanks!

Welcome.

The RI pickups are quite similar to the originals.

Worth noting is the fact that the majority of players both professional and private make the OEM stuff work for them and are not quick to replace their pickups. For those who find their OEM stuff lacking, this should be the logical progression of events:

Give the OEMs more than one chance as they just might work for you 'down the road'. Adjusting their heights for what could be their 'perfect' spot is a huge factor also.

Now, having said the above, if the OEMs just don't do it for you under the majority of circumstances, first decide what you DO like about them and THEN, what you don't. See, what happens is, too often players decide what they don't like ONLY. They then run out and get replacement pickups which fills all the voids of the OEMs but they then find out that the stuff they DID like about the OEMs has disappeared with the replacements.

Keeping in mind the former paragraph, get back to us if you do decide in the final analysis that the OEMs must go. You'll get a deluge of opinions (all valid, I may add), yet we could better advise you from there.

If you decide that you dont like the single coils. You may want to try something like a duncan lil 59er in the bridge. Seems like most punk rockers lean towards humbuckers in the bridge. The lil 59er will fit in the existing cut out and is a mini humbucker. I have one in my strat and it sounds great with distortion where the original single coil was too thin and glassy.
