Hey all,

I've finally mustered up the courage to set up my guitars as opposed to taking them to a luthier and I've run into a bit of a problem.

I think the truss rod is straight (there or there abouts anyhow), the action seems pretty good, but when im on the final step of sorting the intonation, it seems to want to wrestle against me. Has anyone else experienced poor intonation due to the poor bridge/saddles and, is this a common problem with this guitar? If so, can anyone recommend a good bridge?

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon

What are the problems you're seeing?

I've recently picked up a MiM Jag and also had trouble with intonation. I'm not sure what difficulties you're running in to but in my case it just didn't seem possible to get perfect intonation along the entire neck. I could get 12th fret harmonics matching the fretted 12th fret notes but then fretting a note close to the nut would be flat and anything higher than 12th would start to get sharp.

I felt to me like fighting a neck that just wasn't fretted properly but then I'm no expert so maybe I'm missing something too. I've used the same technique on many other guitars and it's worked before but the Jag just didn't want to play nicely.

Paul

Thanks for the reply Paul.

It seems to tune OK but when fretting each string at the 12th, I'd say four out of the six strings appear in tune, but the G string and B seem to want to stay sharp, no matter how much I adjust the saddle?

Yes, the saddle for the G string on mine has to be all the way back and it's still a touch sharp when fretted on the 12th. The rest do intonate on 12th fine though between the harmonic and the fretted note.

Cheers for the reply paul. I guess what I'm trying to establish is whether a mustang bridge would ease the issues?

have any of ya'll looked into the Buzz Feiten tuning system? This is caused by additional tension from the nut, and will cause the first 4-6 frets to slightly go sharp or flat, can't remember the exacts. Anywho, he developed a way to correct this by sawing off just a bit of the top of the fret board (I do not suggest doing this yourself) which moved the nut a bit closer and therin attained exact tuning. I can't recall, but I know there's a company that makes a compensated nut which duplicates the BF system.

Dear,

Tuning equal which guitar with electronic - digital tuners to pitch, then the tuning is NOT correct. B and G string is always a little bit out of tune.
When both strings are correct tuned then they are bad at 12th fret.
I tune the B string a little lower then then pitch, in such a way that you can mesure it, but not hearing it.
The G string on its turn, a same amount lower then the B string.
There is a video on youtube that shows you WHY .
Please search on Youtube for Steve Vai " guitars ".
In one of these video he shows the Ibanez with bended frets, and this refers to the way of tuning I mentioned before.

Kind regards,

Josinka

I tune up my jaguar and every other guitar I own or play on a basic Korg tuner or an amp tuner or someone elses guitar and then tune it by ear on a lower 232OOO D chord .I suppose I got into the habit in the early 60's where most acoustics and indeed electrics even the top name ones had fixed bridges,or worse unfixed bridges, and never really intoned correctly .In truth we didnt really worry much ,we were just glad the amp didnt blow up and the Dad with the van turned up . Usually if the D sounds OK the rest is OK :D

Kind of running into the same issues, but was wondering why the nut to the 12th fret measures 12 inches, but the 12th fret to the saddle all the way forward measures 12 1/8th inch. Seems to me the saddle was not placed in the proper position. I realize there is some adjustments to be made, but I own a Am. strat and a few Les Pauls and they measure pretty close to scale lenght on the low e and g string when the intonation is set.
