Hey, all- Had been planning to use this year's tax refund to pick up my (mid-price-range) dream Strat, but apparently the IRS had other plans. While weighing some more affordable options, I thought of a Vintage Modified Jazzmaster that had caught my eye recently. Was pretty intrigued by what I saw- comfortable Strat neck, nice, punchy tone from the P-90-style pups, and a pretty cool Fender butterscotch, black and maple vibe. Some concerns: how is the quality on current Squier pieces? The concentric tone/vol pots felt rough. Also, I'm thinking that I heard that Squiers won't handle heavier gauge strings. Any insight y'all might be able to provide would be appreciated.

I haven't played the VM Jazzmaster but I played a J Mascis Jazzmaster and it was great. I want one.
