Hi there, 1st time poster here

I have just bought new AVRI '62 reissue JM from a local dealer in NZ and think I have registered it properly on the product registration part of this site. However the product number information that came with the guitar is confusing. There are 3 tags in the case compartment, one of them has P/N 005-939-100, another red tag that looks like some sort of quality control tag, has P/N 038645.

The body has a white scratch-plate and p'ups and the paint is Ocean Turquoise, which changes colour from blue to turquoise depending the light. I couldn't see that colour option in the AVRI drop-down menu on the product registration part of this site. Does that mean it is a geetar that isn't currently being manufactured? (Could be a possibility because NZ is the geetar backwater of the globe and it wouldn't surprise me if its been sitting in the shop for years. There were 3 grubsrews missing from the bridge when it arrived by courier - which have since turned up)

The serial number on the neckplate starts with a 'V' and when I type it in to the serial number search part of the site, it comes up as being made in the Corona plant. But it says that for the year of manufacture I need to check the stamp on the base of the neck. But I don't want to take the scratch-plate off because it looks too pretty and I don't want to mess with it.

Can anyone help with the product identification number please?

TIA
Cheers
Pete

I know the thin skins were offered in OTM in around 2007.

You need to remove the neck to be sure. It's really not a big deal.

You can also email Fender customer service with the S/N and they'll give you the rundown on the guitar however the info can sometimes be less than 100% accurate.

FWIW, someone over at the offset guitars forum told me that the digit after 'V1' in the serial # denotes the year of manufacture in the 2000s (in which case mine's a 2006 - cos its V16xxxx)

Interesting - I've always heard that you could not decode anything from the American Vintage model serial numbers since the numbers are somewhat sequential but Fender, like they did in Leo's day, just puts the stamped plates in a parts bin and they tend to get out of sequence (assemblers may have a stack on their workbench, the bin gets knocked around so the plates get ranomized, etc.). Someone tried to do a rough timeline of the numbers for the AV Strats a few years ago. This excludes the AV 52 Tele; they have the serial number (without the "V" prefix") stamped onto the bridge like Fender did back in '52.

Well I've really got no idea about the secret code of the serial numbers - I'm just relaying a story I heard. One of these days I guess I'll just have pull it apart and look at the stamp at the base of the neck dammit

Well I did pull off the neck a couple of weeks ago to shimmy it a bit, and the serial number on the neck and on the body were both slightly different to each other (within a few weeks). However neither of them was 2006 so bang goes that theory.

From 2006 Frontline

010-0800-800 Three Color Sunburst
010-0800-805 Olympic White
010-0800-806 Black
010-0800-808 Ocean Turquoise
010-0800-857 Surf Green
010-0800-883 Ice Blue Metallic

Broken down, that is 010-Corona, 08-62 AVRI Jazzmaster, 00-Rosewood Fretboard, 8-Vintage hard case, 08-Ocean Turquoise.

Positions 6and 7 usually use 00 for Rosewood and 02 for Maple but there are exceptions to the rules.

Hope this helps.

That number may not show up because it is not in the current lineup. Now they make the 65 AV and it uses 011-2200 with the 22 being 65 AV Jazzmaster apparently only available in sunburst and Aztec Gold. What?
