All,

Hi, I just joined this forum today. I am a Fender and Squier owner, so I should have joined this forum much sooner...LOL! Anyway, I'm considering purchasing the Fender Marauder (2011 Modern Player series) in the lake placid blue color. I played one recently at a local guitar store and really liked the look, feel, and versatile sound of the guitar. I've read some reviews and watched a few demos online about this guitar, but wanted to get feedback on it from Marauder owners out there. If anyone owns this guitar, I'd really like to get your impressions on it, including the pros and cons. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

I'm picking up a LPB Marauder on Friday. I'll post a review after I've had it a while. I played it in the store several times. The neck is really nice, and the quality of the knobs and switches impressed me (better fit and finish than a $2000 Les Paul that I recently played.)

bugo,

Thanks for your reply. I look forward to reading your review on the guitar. I was at my local Guitar Center today and demoed the black model they had in stock, which I had done once before. I LOVE the guitar, but want one in the lake placid blue color. Based on my experience playing the guitar, it seems like such a great value for the price. I love the tone variety and the way the neck feels. It also just feels like a well built guitar. Unfortunately, Guitar Center is out of stock in the lake placid blue color, so I wouldn't get it until the end of March. I have one on order with Sweetwater now, so hopefully I'll get it in my hands relatively soon. If you don't mind me asking, where are you getting yours from? Enjoy!

I'm getting it from a local guitar shop called (creatively) The Music Store at 31st and Mingo. I got it for $336. Which is a tremendous value for a brand new guitar of this quality and uniqueness.

Of course I'll post pictures. Hopefully the day I buy it will be a nice sunny day so I can take it outside and get some good bright snaps. Just watch for a post titled "NGD: Lake Placid Blue Fender Marauder" or something similar. I can't wait!

The Lake Placid Blue paint is beautiful. You'll really like the way your guitar looks. And like all Lake Placid Blue guitars, it will change color depending on how much light is hitting it. And rjames1973 is right: this is a very versatile guitar. You have the nasty sounding humbucker, and the smooth Jazzmaster pickup. This guitar is capable of a lot of diverse sounds. There's a video on Youtube that shows a British guy playing a Marauder and it demonstrates all the different tones you can get with this guitar.

Somebody posted in one of the guitar forums that I read that the triplebucker is by far the hottest pickup that Fender has ever put in a stock guitar. Is this true?

Here's a cell phone picture of the guy at the guitar shop holding my soon to be guitar:

Yeah, I've watched that demo by the British guy on YouTube several times now. It's probably one of the best guitar demos I've ever seen, and it definitely contributed to my desire to own this guitar.

Great pic! I'm so jealous right now that you were able to find one of these great guitars in lake placid blue. I didn't realize until today how hard it is to find them in that color at most of the major guitar stores -- at least in my area. I guess I'll just have to keep watching that demo with the British guy until I finally get mine...LOL! My birthday is a couple of weeks away, and I wanted to buy the Marauder for myself as a gift. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Sweetwater gets them in stock soon so I can have it in my hands by then.

That video is a big part of what sold me on the guitar. The diverse array of sounds is going to prove to be very useful, as I like to use different pickup combinations for different applications. I wanted a Marauder before I even played one, and when I did play it it exceeded my expectations. The idea of having what is sure to be a rare guitar is also very appealing to me. Even if the Marauder is a sales success, it will still be an uncommon guitar compared to Strats and Teles.

I went to Guitar Center and asked them if they were going to get any Marauders in and they said they weren't because they didn't think they could sell them. My thought was that they would get them in in a few months and I could save up some money and buy one (for $399.99, my GC will not budge on price.) I then visited a mom and pop local music store and they actually had a Marauder. So I played it and fell in love instantly. I came in several more times just to play the guitar. I even brought my amp and pedal to the store to play the guitar through. The store had a 40% off MSRP sale (that ended today,) and I wanted to take advantage of it so I went ahead and put $200 down on it. As I posted earlier, I am getting it for $336, which is a tremendous value. I'm getting a high quality brand new Fender for less than the price of a CV Strat. I'm getting the guitar, a hardshell case (the generic Strat/Tele style case fits the guitar VERY well. I thought I was going to have to order a custom case,) a stand, and a clip on tuner.

I'm happy to be spending money at a local store instead of Guitar Center. The only bad thing about this store is that they don't sell used guitars and I usually buy used. I already have an eye on another guitar they have that GC doesn't have (J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster. I played it and thought "this is a Squier?" It played better than the vaunted CV series.) The guitar's controls is what sold me on the guitar. Most low-priced Jazzmasters omit the complex controls of the original Jazzmaster. But the J Mascis Jazzmaster has the wheels above the neck pickup and the selector switch. It looks cool too with the white paint and gold pickguard. This is most likely my next guitar after the Marauder.

How do you think these are going to sell? I think they are going to be very rare and only sell for a few years. Fenders of all new design rarely sell. What is the oldest all new design Fender that is currently made? This is a great guitar but I don't see it being a sales success. Just a gut feeling I have.

Is there a local mom and pop guitar store near you? They might be able to order it directly from Fender. The Music Store can order you any Fender or Squier you want. Look around for a store that has good prices. The store I go to has lower prices than Guitar Center and I saved $64 on the Marauder compared to the lowest price I've found online. The economy is bad, and some stores are willing to make deals. And it's time for the 2012 models to come out and they need space for them so the 2011 models are discounted heavily. And you could play it before you took it home in the store, so if anything was wrong with it the store would handle the warranty.

There are a couple of mom and pop shops in my area, but I don't think they'd be able to order the Marauder straight from Fender. Still, it's a very good idea, and I will look into that.

Sounds like you got a great deal on your Marauder -- especially since you're getting a hardshell case, and these guitars don't come with a case. I didn't even bother asking for a deal on a case with Guitar Center or Sweetwater. I don't really need a hardshell case, though, as I don't play in a band and mostly jam at home. I do a lot of home recording, so the guitar will mainly remain in a rack with my other guitars until I need it for recording purposes or to jam with friends. Sweetwater gave me a relatively good deal on the guitar (IMO), as I will be paying $369.00 (no shipping charge or sales tax included in the total price). Anyway, I'll double check the local mom and pop shops and see what that turns up. Thanks for the help!

The case does not come with the guitar. I'm buying it separately. But the case is only $59, and it seems to be high quality, and the guitar fits in it like it was made for it. The stand and tuner are also not included in the price.

I don't really have room for another case, but I wanted to have a brand new case for a brand new guitar. And I wanted one that fit it. You got a great deal - mine was $365 with tax. The only negative is that you don't get to play the guitar before you buy it. I like to play before I buy, even though I did buy an Ibanez acoustic for a Christmas present last year sight unseen. I got lucky with it, and I didn't leave the store until I played and inspected the guitar for flaws. It was perfect. You can always return the guitar, but that is such a hassle.

For those unfamiliar with the Marauder, it is a new offset design Fender guitar. It has a triplebucker pickup in the bridge position and a Jazzmaster pickup in the neck position. It has a 5 way switch. The selections are:

1) The two 2 coils of triplebucker closest to the bridge (humbucker sound)
2) All 3 triplebucker coils
3) The coil on the triplebucker that is furthest from the bridge
4) The coil on the triplebucker that is furthest from the bridge and the Jazzmaster pickup
5) The Jazzmaster pickup

There is a world of difference between the triplebucker and the Jazzmaster pickup. It's the best of both worlds. And I prefer a single coil neck pickup, so I'm going to feel right at home.

I agree that it's risky to purchase a guitar sight unseen and without playing it first. A good friend of mine, who also plays the guitar, used to give me a hard time about that, but now he's doing the same thing...LOL. The only guitar I ever purchased off the rack was a Taylor 814ce, which I no longer have. It's always a good idea to play a guitar first and see if you bond with it before you buy it. On the other hand, I guess I kind of have a "phobia" about purchasing a guitar that multiple people at the store had their hands on. It's strange, but that just bothers me. Also, the only good guitar store close to where I live just doesn't take good care of their guitars. Nine times out of 10, I'll demo a guitar that is scratched up and looks like it was just generally not treated well (probably by the customers AND staff at the store). It is a major hassle to have to return a guitar you order before playing, but I've been lucky to never have that happen to me. Also, I'm just a hobbyist guitar player, so I guess my standards are a little lower than folks who gig regularly.

This guitar is in perfect shape. It looks like it has never been played. I very easily could have played it more than everyone else combined have played it because it hasn't been in this store for very long. This store doesn't get a lot of shredder kids, so the guitar has been treated very well.

The used guitars that I've bought have been in mint or near mint condition. The Classic '50s Strat has a tiny ding on the top of the guitar that is barely noticeable. And if I do ding this guitar, I won't feel quite as bad as I would if it were dead mint like my other Strats.

Sounds look a great deal! I have a Marauder on order now with Sweetwater in the lake placid blue color. Unfortunately, they aren't scheduled to arrive in their warehouse until the end of March (UGH!!!). It seems like everyone wants one of these in blue. I could be wrong about this, but I predict that the Marauder is going to be a big hit for Fender.
