Can anyone else that owns a Mustang Special tell me what kind of packaging it was shipped in? Because mine was shipped in packaging dismally inferior to any other guitar I've ever purchased and I don't know if this is Fender's fault or Musiciansfriend's fault.

The guitar comes packaged as follows:
Guitar wrapped in a foamy sheath, put inside a gig bag, and that is put inside a cardboard box with almost ZERO internal bracing, foam padding, etc. Furthermore the box they used isnt a box that opens on both ends, that you have to slide the guitar out of; this box is a lid-and-bottom style that you lift the lid off the bottom, but the problem is the top and bottom halves of this box don't even sit flush together, there is about 3-4 inches where the bottom edge of the lid part does not sit flush with the base of the bottom half, so what you end up with is a box who's two halves are not sitting snug and TAPE is the only thing keeping the lid from falling off the base.

I can't get a straight answer from Musiciansfriend about whether they are the ones to blame, if they re-package these guitars and throw in a free gig-bag as a gimmick that I don't even want, in lieu of properly packaging the guitar for shipping so that it doesnt get DAMAGED, which is the problem, my Mustang's 3-way switch is crackling, one of the pickup coils drops in and out of being heard, which means the guitar was DAMAGED during shipping because of this abysmal packaging, which is nothing like I've seen any other guitar shipped in. Everyone knows UPS and FedEx beat the living hell out of their boxes. So does Fender ship guitars out to vendors like this, or is Musiciansfriend re-packaging these guitars in this horrendously sub-par fashion? Mind you, when I got my SQUIER Duo-Sonic, the guitar was packed to the tee, was solidly and safely padded and braced and the whole 9 yards. Why can't Fender do the same for a guitar that costs 3x as much???

So can anyone else share with me how their Mustang Special arrived? Because at this point I am thinking of getting a refund instead of an exchange because I'm not going through this fiasco with pitiful packaging again. I feel horrible having to ship this Mustang back, its such a nice guitar and I fear for its well being on the return.

My Fender 51 came double boxed, The guitar itself was in a Fender box, guitar wrapped in the white like you wrote and inside the gig bag. With all that is wrong with yours, maybe its possible that you received someone elses returned guitar. I have heard of that happening with some online retailers.

Its a pretty broad picture to paint to blame packaging for your switching and pickup problem. I have received several packages from musiciansfriend boxed the same way you described and had no issues. It might just be a bad pickup or connection from your switch. It happens. Nothing is perfect. If you like the Mustang alot, return it for another. However you can blame those big brown truck guys that deliver them, I have seen them toss guitars in boxes with no care whatsoever.

I'd spray a bit of contact cleaner on the switch terminals first. Other than the subpar packaging was the box or any packing materials actually damaged? I'll bet MF repackages them. I doubt F would box it this way from the factory.

I bought a Mustang Special from a store in Sydney Australia on the weekend and it was handed to me in the gig bag. I saw the box on the floor, but didn't take much notice of the inside.

Mine is perfect and it had obviously been flown from Japan to Aus.

Maybe you just got a dodgy one.

Damn impressed with mine.

it would seem to me that your selector switch problem would be covered by the warranty. Probably by musiciansfriend purchase warranty as well as Fender's warranty.

Thanks for the input everyone, I am going to exchange it for a fresh one. I do love the guitar, this is just the 3rd time I have had to return a guitar because it was hosed up upon arrival :(
