If your going to put your guitar down for a while or not play it for long periods of time whats the best way to do the strings?? Should you loosen them or leave them in tune?? Or take them completely off?

You will probably get mixed answers ......but here is my thoughts. I leave all of my guitars strung up and tuned to pitch. Always. I have guitars I have stored this way for 20+ years and everything is perfectly fine! If you take all string tension away, the truss rod was adjusted to counteract the tension of the strings, so now your neck is back-bowed. Over time, the wood can and will take a "set" in this back-bowed state, and loosening the truss rod may do nothing to add relief when you string up again. Of course each piece of wood is different, but the guitar's neck was MADE to handle string tension ;) Where you store your guitar is way more important than anything else. Attics (too hot) and basements (too damp) and near heaters, sunlight, AC or heat vents.....these will ruin a guitar in a hurry! In a case, under your bed...strung up and tuned to pitch and I promise you that your guitar will hibernate safely for nearly forever! :D

Good advise Steve. I constantly worry about mine because I have too many to store anywhere else but the basement. I keep an eye on the dehumidifier in the summer, and take them off the rack and air out the cases often if I don't play them. When my wife retires next year we hope to move, and the next house will have to have a room for a studio.

I agree with this advise 100 percent and have always stored my guitars this way for 45 years. some have been in the case ten years or more at a time and usually stayed in tune.
