Hello. Is there a way to establish whether a finish on a vintage fender guitar is original or not.
I am concerned about a recent purchase which looks to good to be true. Upon looking closely in the cavities I have found areas or what seems like grey primer OVER the color and then a new layer of color on top of the primer.
I have also found several pieces of masking tape inside the cavities which were hard to get out and they have paint on them.
This is the largest purchase I have made on a guitar and although the re-finish is very good, I have paid top price as an all original guitar.

Thanks for any help.

Tom.

Masking tape? Ummm, no. Consult an expert.

If its a new refin the paint under the PG will look the same as on the exposed areas. Check the neck pocket.

usually under the pick guard and in the neck cavity you can see the original paint (if it is refinished)

Also what guitar is it and what year is that can help with your refinish question.
