chogster, could you give me a quick lesson on how you measure your pup heights? My guitar teacher never measures, he only does it by ear, so he was no help.

Chartman,

Your guitar teacher is quite right, pups should be adjusted by ear, as I've found out by tinkering about beyond the manufacturers recommended settings.

With that in mind though I'm still interested in hearing people's settings. From the vast amount of problems I suffered it's obvious my guitar was not set up in the slightest! I had to really crank up my amp (Blackstar HTR-5R) to get any decent sound out of it.

To check your pup height measure using a flat edge steel ruler between the pup pole and the string. Only measure the high 'E' and low 'E' strings on each pup. If you have a steel rule it's best to place the rule on top of the pole and behind the string; so you're only measuring what you can see on the ruler underneath the string.

String height is measured at the 17th fret. Some people recommend doing this with a capo on the 1st fret - so move it down one if you've been playing Johnny's stuff!

Chogster, I just finished measuring what I think you asked for. I am giving you all measurements in mms.

High pitch E string height at 17th fret = 3.4
low pitch E = 5.5

Neck pup high E = 3.9, low E = 4.4

Bridge pup high E = 2.6, low E = 3.6

I have no idea if these are in any believable range. My guitar teacher eyeballed the pup heights and thought that neck pup to low E could be closer, but I am not touching it because I like the tone as is.

I have a Blackstar HT-5 (original model), so we are comparing Granny Smith to Red Delicious...

I found that the ISF control had to be cranked to about 10 to get a good tone with my Jaguar. Even then, it was not the quality of tone I can get out of my Vox, clean or dirty. I can get awesome tones with my Tele and the ISF 12 o'clock and clockwise. My Jag is not meshing well with the HT-5. The HT-5 is an awesome beast. It just needs the right settings and guitar. YMMV.

I have a question, and then some comments on the tone of this guitar, now that I have played it for awhile.

Question: I have the white on white version. am thinking of replacing the pickguard, and from what i know is out there, I am leaning toward a tortoise color.
- any other colors you all might recommend?
- recommendation on a vendor to buy from?

even though the 4-position toggle is a different control than all other Jags, the toggle is framed in what seems to be the same hexagonal dimensioned plate as other Jags. dont see any other differences from std Jag, so I am figuring aftermarket Jag pickguards will work.

Tone:
I LOVE the tones out of the JM Jag better than any contemporary or vintage Jag I have ever played (about 7 of them). Kudos to Johnny and the Bare Knuckle gang.

position 1 = (closest to the bridge), bridge pickup, bridgy tele type sound, least favorite position
position 2 = pups in parallel, THE best surf tone of any guitar I have ever played, crank up the reverb on this one, sometimes the low pass filter "on" helps this tone
position 3 = neck pup, nice sound, sort of neck straty, like it for rhythm playing
position 4 = pups in series, this is the surprise position and has really grown on me, liked it at first, love it now for jazz. so it is really wired as a humbucker, and generally I dont like the tone of almost all humbuckers, but this is so jazzy to me. This is the only toggle position that both low pass filter switches affect, and you get 4 distinctly different and usable tones from the different combos of switch positions.

Am playing this guitar thru 66 vintage Pro Reverb and a comtemporary DRRI ltd edition version

Would like to hear comments from other JM Jag owners on their experiments with its tones.

Chartman,

Still awaiting my replacement from Fender, it's been nearly 2 months since mine was sent back! Looking at your measurements it appears that your action is pretty high compared to my MIM Jag & my old JM Jag. Is this the way you prefer it? Your pup heights also appear to be a lot lower.

How are you finding the high 'E' being close to the edge of the neck? I'm pretty sure the reason for this is the Mustang saddle. Compared to my MIM I found this difficult to play in that respect as the string kept popping off the board; especially when playing high up the fretboard!

As for your scratch plate query, I personally love the white on white. I have a Tortoise version on my tri-colour MIM and the pup switch is the same oblong hex style shape. Not having my new JM yet it's hard to picture, but it obviously comes down to personal taste!

What Marr tunes do you play? I personally love the Girl Afraid opening riff, Some girls are bigger & Headmasters Ritual! Songs I listened to as a teenager, I'm still playing 20+ years later....timeless!!

I also have a Jetglo 89 Rickenbacker 330, not hugely versatile but sounds immense!

Chogster,

that is too long for you JMJag return, when was the last time you contacted them and what did they say?
I will probably drop the action some, but like the pups right where they are.

have had a little trouble early on popping the high E, but used to it now.

playing Marr tunes: Some girls, girlfriend in a coma, Heaven knows I'm miserable now.

Absolutely love the jangly sound from Rickenbackers! What year is it?

I spoke with Fender about a month and 1/2 ago, they said that they are awaiting the next batch to arrive from the US. They also said that they would speak with marketing ref a signed booklet as I clearly should have had one. You're right in saying it's been too long! A lot of money has been forked out here & all I've had is hassle! In all my years of playing, I've never had to reason to return or complain about a guitar before, so this is a first.

My Rick was built in 1989 & is absolutely beautiful. As a kid, being a big fan of The Jam & The Smiths I've always been fascinated with 330's.

Think I'll give Fender a call next week to see what the score is.

RE: the high E being too close to the edge of the fretboard

It's easily fixable. The neck needs to be yanked towards the upper horn. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, your local tech should know what to do with a single look.

New to the forum! Hi! I was reading to see if others had the same issues as myself so I thought I would reply and confirm. I have two. I have several spots where here paint has come off with little nics. I take care of my guitars and no doubt they all get a nic here or there but already I have 3 spots (although tiny) where the paint scratched very very easily. Almost like it was painted yesterday and not cured. My other complaint is the high E string as others have posted. It is very annoying and to me almost unplayable as it comes off the fingerboard with minimal effort. I'll be getting it to my guitar techie and see what he can do but if it is not a major improvement then I will be selling.

I love the sounds I am getting through all amps. I use an AxeFx II and have and endless supply. :D I love the #4 position. I will though be getting a smaller knob as it sometimes inteferes with strumming.

I really do love this guitar and the short scale and hope I can get the high E string issue addesssed to my satisfaction. As for the paint, I am hoping it was my fault and not a real issue as the nics are on the backside. Time will tell.

Here she is:

congrats cwwjr1!

how about a review after a couple of sessions playing? I am particularly interested in your take on the different tones you can get.
