I discovered a white Fender Jaguar at a local pawnshop for $500. I got them down to $400 and almost bought it but wanted to do some research on the serial number first.

The guitar does not say where it was made anywhere on the headstock or body. The neck plate does have a serial number engraved so I checked out a few serial number sources online. Apparently, Jag SN's that begin with "V" are either (circa) '97 Japanese or American.

I went back to the shop yesterday to test the electronics assuming this was a Japanese Jag. I asked the sales rep. where it was made and he said "probably Japanese". (this is a mega pawn shop so I know they usually do their research). I decided it was a fairly good deal and purchased the guitar.

Well, I took the neck off last night to check the dates and adjust the rod and the dates on the neck and body were 2004. The name stamped is "Sandoval"...same as my 2004 Highway 1. So I've been searching online today trying to find more info. I found an 2004 American Jag neck on ebay also stamped..."Sandoval".

Soooo Did I just purchase a 2004 American Jag at a pawnshop for $400? How can I be sure?! Regardless, it's a great guitar!

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer!

Sorry, I don't have a camera so I can't post any photos. I'm trying to avoid stepping into the 21st century in terms of technological communication devices.

I also read yesterday that American Jags have a 4-ply pickguard as well. Mine does have the 4-ply guard but, obviously, this could be un-original. Are there any tell-tell features apparent in American Jags that can be spotted with the naked eye?

check the tremolo position on it. the mexican jags are located closer to the saddles for increased break anngle. The japanese jags are pretty accurate to the tremolo position. Also, the MIJ's have the s/n near the joint of the neck/body. That's about the best I can say without photos. I'm sure some of the gurus on here may have a better opinion on it, let's see what they have to offer. Either way, you can't go wrong with $400!

After more research I'm almost postitive it is American.

And you're telling me!!! Deals like this seem to be rarer and rarer. Especially since any pawn shop employee can jump on google/ebay to price guitars.

Thanks for the help!
