Hi Plagueskill, the Competition Mustang would get my vote even though my favourite guitar in my collection is my 1965 John Lennon Casino which is quite like the Elitist Casino that you have your eye on.

Matching headstock Fenders aren't all that common place whereas Elitist Casinos will be made for quite a few more years due to their overwhelming popularity.$1250 for such a fine Mustang is well worth it and the wear and tear on the finish is much funkier and cool than any factory or hand done relicing job.So go for the Mustang-it's such a great little instrument.

Just google fretboard radius, I think it the first site that explains what fretboard radius is says something like that i remember reading about a year or so ago.

And guitslinger, i'm pretty set on the Mustang, however i'm still torn, I know I love the sound of the Casino more, but the neck is not my preference, and I know the neck is perfect on the Mustang judging by the other Fenders i've played....
But that is a good point that mustang's are much rarer.....

I am always amazed how people think that vintage Mustangs have a 'tuning problem'. I own a '72 and '73 vintage Mustang, and an '03 re-issue JagStang. All the same bridge/vibrato. I have never had a tuning issue with any of these guitars. Unless you are trying to "dive-bomb" on the vibrato, there shouldn't be an issue. In fact, people put Mustang bridges on Jaguars to make their tuning and bridge more stable! If ya dive-bomb, get an '80s ripper like an old Ibanez or something with lock-downs on the nut. Then you'll stay in tune! If you aren't beating on the Mustangs, you won't have any problems despite what some say. Go for the '67!

Agreed--no tuning problems--in fact my mustang is quite stable--if it doesn't stay in tune, it's time to change the strings...

Good move plagueskill,as I said '67 Mustangs are becoming more and more rare whereas Casinos will be made for quite a few years yet as they are one of the Gibson/Epiphone family best sellers.I don't see what you mean about the Casino neck, the neck on my 1965 John Lennon is the best of all my guitars and I have smallish hands that are well suited to the Mustang.

Hi, I consider myself a fender mustang expert if you have any questions at all. The blue competition mustang i would get if i were you, i'm very partial to the competition mustangs. If you're familar with kurt cobain he played a left handed one in the smells like teen spirit music video. These generally go for around 1500 on average in this economy (pushing 2000 before). I have a 1969 competition red one myself that i bought off craigslist. Craigslist is the way to go cause you get to play it and negotiate. The competition models in my opinion are extremely cool looking do to the stripes, and who doesnt love that matching headstock. 1250 is definately a decent price, but i would try and lower it if you can. The paint is obviously worn, but ur getting 10 times a better guitar then a reissue, plus gives it character. If you like the 67 look better then thats a fine option too, don't get a reissue they just go down in value, and the electronics are cheap all mij. So id go for the competition def, and next up the 67. Feel free to ask anything, i know a lot.

Heres a Mustang i'm really interested in; http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/msg/2821581406.html
Any idea about the mods done to it? A bad deal?

Also in relatively the same area, is a 1969 reissue, with a Seymour Duncan hot rails pick up for $525 and thats what I was gonna do with a Mustang anyways. Whats the better idea?

DON'T BUY VINTAGE GUITARS TO UPGREAD THEM LIKE THAT!! YOU DESTROY THE RESALE VALIUE!! If you want to rip up guitars buy reissue
