Also in relatively the same area, is a 1969 reissue, with a Seymour Duncan hot rails pick up for $525 and thats what I was gonna do with a Mustang anyways. Whats the better idea?

The original '67 Mustang with its HSC for $1200 is in fact a good deal.

The re-issue '69 is undoubtedly MIJ and is likely made of basswood (vs the poplar of the vintage instruments).

Tough call but I'd go for the '67 original.

I'm definitely considering one, just really concerned about the tuning problems on them.

And the price just went down to $1000, any ideas on a good offer to make?

A grand is a reasonable price -- if you're truly interested in a vintage Mustang, you could do a lot worse. I'd grab it now, before somebody else does.

I am always amazed how people think that vintage Mustangs have a 'tuning problem'. I own a '72 and '73 vintage Mustang, and an '03 re-issue JagStang. All the same bridge/vibrato. I have never had a tuning issue with any of these guitars. Unless you are trying to "dive-bomb" on the vibrato, there shouldn't be an issue. In fact, people put Mustang bridges on Jaguars to make their tuning and bridge more stable! If ya dive-bomb, get an '80s ripper like an old Ibanez or something with lock-downs on the nut. Then you'll stay in tune! If you aren't beating on the Mustangs, you won't have any problems despite what some say. Go for the '67!

EVen with the finish flaws is that guitar a better deal ya think?

Im not really concerned about the trem, honestly i'd love to just block it and not have to worry about it.

Hi, I consider myself a fender mustang expert if you have any questions at all. The blue competition mustang i would get if i were you, i'm very partial to the competition mustangs. If you're familar with kurt cobain he played a left handed one in the smells like teen spirit music video. These generally go for around 1500 on average in this economy (pushing 2000 before). I have a 1969 competition red one myself that i bought off craigslist. Craigslist is the way to go cause you get to play it and negotiate. The competition models in my opinion are extremely cool looking do to the stripes, and who doesnt love that matching headstock. 1250 is definately a decent price, but i would try and lower it if you can. The paint is obviously worn, but ur getting 10 times a better guitar then a reissue, plus gives it character. If you like the 67 look better then thats a fine option too, don't get a reissue they just go down in value, and the electronics are cheap all mij. So id go for the competition def, and next up the 67. Feel free to ask anything, i know a lot.

Hey thanks for the reply, I'm torn between the Mustang and an Epiphone Casino Elitist.....
Craigslist is truly the only way to go imo!
Yeah also Kurts the reason I found about the Mustangs, not the reason why i'm looking though, I love the short scale ( I have smaller hands)
How hard is it to block the trem and bridge?

There is really no need to block the bridge, I wail on mine and it almost never goes out of tune, so diffinately don't block it. The bridge is great, everything about it is great, except stringing it can be a pain sometimes. Overall, it is my favorite guitar there is. I too have pretty small hands and playing on a small neck like this changes everything. When you go from say a stratocaster with small hands to a fender mustang, you instantly can play things you were never able to do. Its hard to explain but when you play a mustang you'll feel it. And don't what ever you do, modd a vintage model like blocking the bridge, there is no need, and you could damage it.

oh thats great to know! My only other concern is that I heard that its rather difficult to bend on Mustangs, due to the fretboard radius and is better for chords and rhythm instead of leads right? What gauge strings work best? And one last thing, would you even say that its wrong to add a hot rails pickup or anything in the bridge position?

Lol it's easy to bend due to the radius idk where u got your info, don't change the pickups and there is no difference between any guitar that makes one a rhythm or one lead. Any guitar can be anything, you should just go and play it.
