I have a 1962 Fender Jaguar: See below

I hardly ever play it as I have a Telecaster and a Squier Strat and a local guitar shop owner wants to trade me for it...

I'd thought of asking for a new Gilmour Strat when it comes out but it looks like the Gilmour Strat will be quite expensive but then I thought why not ask for a Gibson Les Paul and an American Fender Strat...

Book value of the Jaguar is about $3500 so I think its a sensible trade... any thoughts?

Some people have said I'd be crazy to part with it but remember I hardly ever play this Jaguar so it's just hanging there on the wall...

It's just my opinion but I would hold on that Jaguar. Even if you don't play it much hold on to it for investment purposes at least. That thing is gonna be worth alot more than it already is in 10 years.

You can put it under a bed for 10 years and it will probably appreciate. But as someone I know on another forum wisely said about that: "not real money, and not real fun."

On the other hand, you can trade it for guitars you WILL play and enjoy, and it will end up in the hands of either A) someone who will play and enjoy it, or B) some collector who will stash it under a bed and not get any real money or real fun from it.

Life is short.
There is no prize at the finish line for having made all the "best" decisions.
Guitars have no value: only the music you make with them does.

Trust your gut. If it was me, I'd trade a guitar I never played for two I'd play in a heartbeat, regardless of what I thought they'd be worth in the future. For all I know, I haven't GOT a future.

If you don't enjoy it... get something you will enjoy. Especially if it's a Gilmour strat. I would do anything to have a strat that looks just like his black strat. ( except trade my cyclone ) But if you would enjoy playing something else rather than look at that thing collecting dust go for it. But you should follow your instincts ultimately.

PFOB...

Check this out. I recently changed my Squier Strat and added a Maple Neck and painted the Pickguard. It plays wonderfully well...

If DG's Strat ever makes the light of day it will need to be good to beat this one for playability....

Glad to see another PF/DG buff on the Fender Forum :-)

Just a general rule to live by...."Never sell a vintage guitar or trade it for
new guitars - especially not a vintage Fender instrument. When you're ready to sell it, consult a vintage guitar specialist. Do lots of research and know where that model is expected to go, from a value POV. Vintage guitars are antiques, not guitars. It'd be like trading a '53 Corvette for
a couple of Aveos."

trust me you'll regret the trade the minute it's gone. It may just be hanging around but it's like money in the bank. and it will keep getting worth more and more as it sits there
