I've posted on here before about the Jaguar Blacktop I bought a couple of months ago. For the money (£250) it's an impressive guitar - well built, nicely finished and decidedly different to my Tele and Strats, but still Fender-y enough to feel sort of familiar.

Anyway, apart from a change of tone pot (to make it more progressive) and ditching the amp-style knobs in favour of the traditional skirted/fluted Jaguar items (God bless ebay), I've not done much at it. Just get it down off the wall and play it every couple of days (it has to take its turn with the others in the collection!).

Playing tonight, fairly quietly on the clean channel of the amp, I noticed an occasional crackle from the guitar. A bit of tracking down and it seemed to come when I touched the selector switch nut (the tip's got a plastic sleeve on it) and when my metal pick just grazed across the strings.

Out came the tools, off came the pick guard and, as suspected, there's no screening in the body cavity, like many other Fenders. There's some foil attached to the back of the guard around the selector switch but it's not connected to earth anywhere - what good can that possibly do?!!

Looks like the conductive paint and copper foil are going to have to make another appearance... Why don't Fender ever seem to bother sorting this out properly?

Never mind, at least it gives me something else to fiddle with :-)

I found that with the Japan jag, touched both the metal on the guitar and the amp and the ridiculous hum went away, it was crazy how bad it was humming.

I have the same problem on my MIM jaguar Blacktop HH purchased june 2012!

Thanks for the tip!

I am not as adventurous with the electronics so, i'll be taking it back to the shop with a copy of your post.

If it doesn't have a power tube in the circuit...I'm not that interested

Stiggie

Did you ever put the screening in under the pick guard? Do you have photos before and after? Did it solve the hum?

Just wondering as I am returning my Jag for similar problems which have not been fully resolved.
