Ok..so i have a 1971 cherry sunburst fender jaguar. It's probly my favourite guitar of all time, but the frets have been shaven down so many times and it has indents down to the fret board. Should i leave it and put her in a glass case and wait another 40 years to see it turn 80? Meanwhile keeping it all original, or should i have the frets completley redone? I guess i could just buy a new jag and let the old girl sleep for a while. Whats your suggestions?

Refret it and play that thing.

I would diligently search out the very best luthier in your area -- one schooled in working with bound fretboards -- and have him assess the guitar with an eye to a possible refret. Any craftsman who's comfortable working with Les Pauls, SGs, ES335s, etc should be able to restore your guitar to factory specs.

Alright. I'll do it. It's kind of scary but...I'll do it.

I can empathize -- I felt the same way when I took my one-owner '78 Les Paul Standard in for a re-fret in '99. The luthier was among the very best in the Southwest and the guitar came back playing better than it ever had, even when it was new. The work was totally transparent and flawless.

Refretting is a necessary evil with guitars and eventually all guitars that have any considerable amount of playing will require a refret.Do as Arjay says, find a luthier in your area who is comfortable with refrets of bound necks-that is if your Jag has a bound board.

Yes, get it repaired. Your Jaguar, or anything mechanical, has the potential of being restored many times over to the point that it will be around longer than you and the next few generations that own it.

+1

Absolutely!

Back then, Fender built their products to last.
