Hello, my friends

I bought a Blacktop Jaguar HH, Rosewood Fretboard, Silver, Model: 0148300591 about one year ago, made in Mexico.
I have two simple questions:

1 - What is the diameter of the strings that come from the factory, in this model?

2 - What product dis recommended to treat the fretboard?

Thank you

Hi Rui,

I have the same model in black. According to Fender, the guitar ships with Super 250Ls (9-42s). I bought my Jag second hand so the first thing I did was change the strings anyway. For me, 9-42s are too light for this short scale guitar, so I went for Ernie Ball Power Slinkys, which are 11-48s. These give a similar feel to the 10-46s I use on my Strats and Tele, as the shorter scale means lower tension at standard pitch tuning.

For fretboard conditioning, lemon oil is generally accepted as the way to go for rosewood.

Hi stiggie, thanks for the reply

I want to keep the original strings to avoid changing the intonation.
I also think the 9-42s are not good to me but the guitar is my son's and he likes it that way so.... :)

About the lemon oil...as far as I know, lemon oil is used mainly for cleanning purposes but I would like something to make it back to the original color too. With the use, the fretboard is fading.

Ok, your (or his) choice with the strings :-)

As for lemon oil, it does indeed recondition and darken the wood - it's not just for cleaning. Rub in a few drops with a lint-free rag next time you're changing strings, then buff with a clean cloth.

Enjoy...

Intonation for most people is not good with 9's as shipped, because few people have the light touch the factory setup demands. Going to 10's is not likely to change factory intonation to any detectable degree but will almost certainly improve intonation for most players with the factory setup, at least based on my experience with a MIM jag. Depends on playing style, but we're talking differences of less than a cent (1/100 of a semitone) in any case.

Fingerboards darken with age in any case. Most people think darker is better (closer to ebony, the preferred fingerboard wood). Fingerboards really don't need to be oiled. I'd just leave it alone.

Fingerboards left alone can dry out and oiling could be beneficial in preventing that.

Lemon oil certainly will darken the wood too.

Lemon Oil is something that is not usual to find here. Does Fender sells any product to the same purpose and, obviously, suitable for a rosewood fretboard?

It's rather difficult to find many portuguese in instruments forums but...there's always one, at least. :D
Thanks for the welcome.

Right! :D Maybe some of our forum colleagues want to join. Portugal is cheap for foreigners these days. :?

Anyway, I've been using the Dunlop Fingerboard 02 Deep Conditioner in my Gibson, which has also a Rosewood fretboard but in the Jaguar the brown is much lighter. Hence my doubts.

I use Guitar Honey on my Blacktop Jag. Darkens up the fretboard after a few uses, makes her look loved.
