Hello all. I just bought a 62 AVRI jaguar. The logo on the headstock is a decal... Is this legit? Serial on neckplate is v161352. I figured it would be under the clear coat.

Thanks!
Rich

Having the headstock decal on top of the lacquer is correct and legit for reissues. The waterslide decals were placed on top of the lacquer in the 50s and 60s, so that is how the USA reissues (and CS reissues) are made today.

The decals didn't go under the clear lacquer until the late 60s - probably coincides with the change to the large CBS-era logos (circa 1968 or so).

+1

The MIM Classic Series instruments have their decals oversprayed with a clear coat during the finishing and painting phase -- the AVRI's reverse this process to conform with vintage protocols.

any insight on the serial?

v161352

V is vintage which I assume is all american

I was told it was an american 2007 reissue of the 62 jaguar

Im sure its all accurate but am interested in how to read the rest of the serial.

Actually you can't read anything from the serial numbers on the AV guitars. You are correct the "V" prefix is only used on the USA-built American Vintage reissues. However, in true vintage fashion Fender puts all these neck plates into a bin; the assemblers just grab a stack to put on their workbench at random. The only ways to verify the year on an American Vintage series guitar is to either take it apart and check the dates written on the body and neck or to contact Fender's consumer relations department - I don't have the phone number handy but the email address is consumerrelations@fender.com

Hope that helps.
