Did you ever really look at the size of the body? That is one huge hunk of wood! There there are many basses out there with less. On top of the body size, add all the components onto and into it and these make the guitar weigh all that much more.

Your question should have been: "Why is a Mexican Jaguar so heavy?"

I own 2 CIJ jaguars and they weigh roughly the same as my telecasters or strat. But yesterday i tried out a MIM Jag in a guitar shop and without having a CIJ to compare with i could easily feel that it was WAY heavier than my CIJ's. Otherwise the guitar was fine and there was'nt any diffenrence in feel, sound or playability.

Is the MIM made from a heavier wood compared to CIJ Jaguars?

Your CIJ Jaguars may have bodies fabricated of basswood, which is both lighter and softer than alder.

Just checked it, and both my CIJ and the new MIM are made of alder. The Japanese ones were made of basswood until '94 though, so Arjay's suggestion was quite qualified.

I've played a few genuine 1960's-era Jaguars and Jazzmasters that were quite comfortable -- about the same weight as an average Les Paul (heavier than a Strat or Tele, but not overly so).

I have a MiM Blacktop Jag and it's a brick, but I find the weight comforting while playing, feels solid. 8)

My '65 Jag is noticeably heavier than my '65 Strat,I always attributed it to being a bigger chunk of alder and more hardware.

'Never thought of the Jazzmaster or Jaguar as heavy, personally.

Y' ever played a bass or 335 or 6120 or gold top?

A little heavier than "regular guitars," but do you feel "SO FAT" when you gain 1-3 pounds?

And 'ever humped a pack, web gear and rifle? That's heavy!
