I recently bought one new and there is this yellowish brown substance on a few of the frets. I tried scrubbing it out with a damp cloth but it wont go. When they were putting the finish on the neck did they just miss and get the frets also? Any ideas as to what this is or how I can remove it myself would be greatly appreciated. Other then this I am pretty happy with this guitar.

Thanks everyone.

Ah yes. The problem here is that you have purchased the Fender Pawn Shop Mustard, rather than the Mustang. An easy mistake to make, but not easy to resolve..

Anyway, to remove the offending finish and restore your frets to a gleaming silver is very straight forward. Get hold of some fine wire wool (00000 grade is ideal) - try brand name "Colron". Use this to rub along the length of the frets. Keep things lubricated with a little lemon oil. Not only will this quickly remove the offending finish, but it will put a great shine on the frets too.

But a word of warning - the wire wool debris will get everywhere, and will stick nicely to your magnetic pickups. So either mask these off before you start, or remove the neck entirely and do the job well away from the rest of the guitar. I just mask the p/ups off - much less aggravation.

Before using steel wool on the frets, I would suggest getting a fret protector to protect the fretboard. Its a thin sheet of steel with a slot for the fret to show thru. Or just tape off the fretboard with painters tape before hand.
