this is my first post, so please forgive any noobishness you detect. my question is: what are the obvious deference's in the way a stock fender jazzmaster or mustang would play/sound? i know this comes down to preference, but if any general advice could be given from someone who has played both a pretty good amount (mustang is more rock sounding, jazzmaster is easier to play or setup, or vice versa), it would be quite appreciated.

thanks in advance

Jack

I love the Mustang's vibrato--great for subtle stuff and more--I've never had any tuning issues with it.

So there you have it--two opposite opinions--meaning--try it out yourself--it may work for your playing styles--as it does for me, or maybe it won't--just like 1996Jag-stang.

No two players are exactly alike--so the bets guitar for me, may be a poor choice for you.

The differences are there--pickups, vibrato, look and options in controls--so as you point out--it comes to personal preference--either could be a great choice--so see which you prefer.

Biggest difference are the pickups in my experience. Simply put, you should try both out to hear what is more pleasing for the music you play

They are both really cool. Both guitars have interesting pickups. The Jazzmaster pickups are more full, while the Mustang has quieter pickups. I have one friend who owns a Jazzmaster and it's his main guitar and another friend who owns a Mustang but plays his Epiphone Les Paul more (but the friend with the Jazzmaster really enjoys the Mustang).
The mustang has a short scale neck (shorter than a Gibson model guitar) and the Jazzmaster has a standard scale neck.
The Mustang has a small, but longish body, while the Jazzmaster has a huge slab of wood. Both have a nice contour. Both bodies feel awesome.
Both guitars are really fun to play.
The mustang pick ups might even be described as weak or mellow, and when clean strumming full chords isn't as overwhelming as with other guitars. The Mustang won't take distortion like most guitars. Its sounds almost faded out. To me this gets a cool atmospheric, noisy quality (kind of like some of the songs from the Lost in Translation soundtrack), but I also like to use my half-broken Boss Heavy Metal Pedal.
Some new Jazzmasters have hotter pickups that have a lot of tone to them and react well to the players technique. It also distorts in a pretty rad way.
Both guitars still have lots of twang, by the way.

I'm actually a bassist but I'm lucky enough to have had some time with these instruments. Overall they are both unique and a lot of fun to play. The Jazzmaster has proven to be more versatile but the Mustang is still worth your time and you might really dig it.

thanks for the insights guys! @patwhite I'm definitely gonna make the investment into getting one of these guitars as they are a lot more suited to what i want to do then a strat would be i think. i also have a boss "hyper metal" pedal (which was designed after the "heavy metal" pedal you mentioned) it sounds loads more fuzzy then a normal distortion does. i can only imagine how grungy it would sound with a mustang. or a jazzmaster, as ive heard those guitars make some great fuzztones with the right pedals. like Gavin Rosedall does with bush :)

Talking about fuzziness makes me want to play guitar but it's 1:37 am and I can't do that to my neighbors. I'll have to wait till the morning.
That pedal turns my bass into a wall of sound.
I just saw a weird DOD bass chorus/compressor/EQ at my local music store and I think I may go check it out again. It sounds like a fun pedal. Back on topic.
You almost need both because they're so cool.

I know nothing about the Mustang, other than they look ace with competition stripes and it's not nearly as 'good' a guitar as a Jazzmaster.

I've had a few plays of a few JMs, and they're rather nice. I'm not sure they're "me", but I can completely understand the appeal. The tremolo does wonderful shimmery stuff - better than anything else I've tried for that - and they look fantastic. And the basic sound is very usable too.

As designed and initially marketed, way, way back when, the Mustang was a beginner's and student's guitar.

The Jazzmaster came some five years after the Strat debuted, billed as Fender's, "Top of the Fender Lineup," intended to be a solidbody contender against Gibson, Epiphone, Gretsch jazzboxes.

In this opinion, the Jazzmaster remains an outstanding, timeless instrument worthy of a discerning player.

Mustang never appealed, period.
