Hi

I love the look of the Pawn Shop series but have never played one. They seem good value for money - Are they as good as they look ?

I own a PS 51 and have played the '72. They are very good. Build quality is top notch. The neck on my 51 is the best fender neck ive ever played, fretwork is top notch. Most of all they play and sound great.

I dropped into my local shop and played a both the PS 51 and the 72 and theyre both pretty nice guitars.

I own a couple of Squier 51's so I can say that the Pawnshop is an entirely different animal. It's beefier and the neck is much better. The one I tried was pretty good right out of the box. Some work on the frets and it woulda been great. I sure wish there were more color options but with a Tele neck fretted with medium Jumbos and an after-market body, this guitar would be a snap to build at home!

I'm interested in a Humbucker guitar right now, so I found the 72 much more intriguing but the one I sampled had a finish flaw with the sound hole binding and once I noticed that, it really bothered me. At a list price of $900 before our 15% tax here in Cali, I think that they're both a bit expensive but if the defect I noticed was a fluke, they're very well turned out and I haven't heard/read any complaints about em yet.

PS: I just noticed that the Interweb price is now $800. If you can buy one without additional taxes, thats not a bad price. either way, this is one of those guitars that I'll be watching for on the used market.

I bought the red Mustang Special and love it. It's like nothing I've ever owned before. Lovin' the short scale, smaller and lighter body and I'm lovin' these pickups. I always meant to buy a Thin Line Tele so that I would have a guitar with these pickups in them, but just never got around to it. But couldn't be happier with these pickups. Really pleasantly surprised.

I've started gigging with it right away after getting it. I think I've done 3 or 4 shows with it now and have had at least few people after each show ask "What is that? I love it?" Or have had people come up after the show and say things like "Wow, love the sound of that guitar."

So all in all I'm really happy that I purchased it.

And since I'm so happy I've decided to mod and customize it so that I don't have a reason to ever get rid of it :)

I just dropped it off at Brown's Guitar Factory (the John Brown that writes for Premier Guitar Magazine), and he's doing the following for me:

-I'm having a custom built rose wood pickguard made - I can't stand how plastic pickguards pickup and collect static, and I think the rosewood pickguard will really give this guitar a very cool and unique look (they are trying to match the wood stock for the pickguard to the rosewood neck so that they look like they belong together).

-I'm having the pickup selector moved to where the input control is (getting it out of the way of heavy and wide stumming). So it will be installed at an angle so that it's perfect for swiping down and switching pickups.

-And since the location for the input jack is now going to be used for the pickup selector I am having a Strat style input jack installed.

-They are also upgrading all of the electronics, wiring and pots. The only thing staying are the pickups (love 'em) and the two switches above the pickups.

-I'm having graphite saddles installed.

I can't remember if there was anything else, but that's the majority of what I'm doing for now, and after the purchase price and all of my mods I will be at somewhere around $1200.

That might be more than what some people feel it's worth, but that's about what I would be paying for a number of other Strats and Tele's that I really like, and this one will be exactly what I want. Almost as if I had asked Fender to build me my dream guitar. I've paid $1200+ for plenty of guitars over the years and always comprimised, but this one had a great base for what I was loving right now (body, neck, pickups, short scale, etc.) and just decided to finish her off with all of the other things that I would love to see on a guitar if I had designed it. Just moving that pickup selector and getting a nice wood pickguard added was huge for me.

So in summary, I'm loving the Pawn Shop Mustang both AS IS and as a great guitar for additional modding :) LOVE IT!!

Wow Dave!

Thats gonna be one nice guitar when you're done!

I'm going to have to drop by the music store and see if they hve one of those in stock because I've been wondering what that short scale neck would feel like. Now, after hearing what you have to say, I gotta do it and see what I'm missing.

when you get your guitar back, how about a few photos?

Just got the call that my baby is done 8)

So here's a quick list of what I had done and quick pic of her on her ride back home

-New custom built and cut solid rosewood pickguard (already seen pics of how this turned out and it is beautiful - the wood grain is incredible).

-I have had the pickup selector on the bottom horn moved to where the input jack is. So it will be volume, tone and then the pickup selector. And I have had this installed at an angle so that it is an easy and clean swipe as I drop my hand down towards it.

-Since the pickup selector is now where the input jack was I am having a Strat style input jack put in.

-All of the pots and capacitors have been upgraded.

-And last but not least they are installing some nice graphite saddles and setup for 10's.

I tired one of the mustangs in a store--felt great just to hold.

In fact after I took it down, I just stood there & held it for a while before I could even play it.

The neck was great and the body quite comfortable.

Of course I love Mustangs any way--and I love mine.

If you don't mind no vibrato and like the pickups--wow--they're nice guitars.

Thanks. REALLY happy with how it turned out. The only change I made after this was taking it back to my tech and having him restring and reset it up with 11's. The 11's sound better and bend like 10's on this short scale guitar.

I just used at a gig this past Wednesday (day before thanksgiving) and got tons of compliments on it and my tone. Couldn't believe how many people asked about and complimented it.

We also had a guest guitarist sit in with the other act and he asked if he could use my rig. I always love hearing other people play my equipment, so of course I said yes. And it was pretty funny after his last tune (he did about 5) he announced from stage that I was never getting this guitar back. He was was just loving it

So all in all it really turned out just like I had hoped.

Again, thanks!
