Greetings all,

I was originally in business for an sg. Them having that nice dark humbucker sound while still being reletively bright (for a gibson) really drawn me to them.

So heres the scoop. A really nice fender mustang just came up on my local craigslist for a decent price (vintage). I have always loved the look and feel of a mustang, they are just soo comfortable. Now for the sound, I am not really looking for an extremely twangy sound. I understand that mustangs are more mid rangey which suits my needs.

If I was to replace the single coils with humbuckers, how do you all think that would affect the sound? Would it be darker? Less twang?

Is there anyone here that has a mustang with hums in it that can comment on the sound difference? Maybe compare to some other guitars?

P.S. Are there any really good hum's in single coil size? I would prefer a little hotter I think because I love to dirty up my sound.

Yea man i have a 1969 reissue (2002 CIJ) lake placid blue competition mustang with a seymour duncan hot rail in the bridge position. Putting in that hot rail was probably the best thing i have ever done for my guitar. Now the distortion my mustang can play ranges from heavy/death metal to classic rock and everything else. The factory neck pickup is good for the clean stuff since the hot rail is just too "hot" for a great clean sound, although the clean still sounds good. Believe me, a good humbucker will make your mustang sound better and more versatile. I Highly recommened one.

The SD Hot Rails is a great pickup. Other worthy candidates might be the HS2, HS3, and YJM DiMarzio's as used in Fender's Yngvie Malmsteen signature Strat. All three provide plenty of growl-on-demand.
