Hi
I have had to drill out the grub screw on my 65 Mustang Trem.
Any idea where to get a replacement screw and does any one know what was under it. Some sort of plastic part to get squished onto the arm I reckon.
all advice welcome.

It think it was a 5mm x 8mm that you can get at a hardware store and as far as a the plastic cut a small chip out of a rubber faucet washer or Good old Ebay

Hi.
Thanks for the idea on the plastic bit, i will try that.
The tread i think must be an american size as i have tried metric european stuff.
I know the bits from the new reisdue mustang doesn't fit.

Cheers

It should be a standard Imperial size. Home Depot, Lowes, or a local hardware store should work. get stainless steel... nylock if possible.

Hi,

I have a similar problem on a '66 Mustang. The screw on my trem is rusted and won't turn. It has a slotted screw.

What drill bit size did you use, and did you have to re-tap the hole?

I know that Fender sold some of those set screws in a pack of 12, they had a hex top.

The screw on mine fell out years ago--I've never been able to find anything to replace it.

Otherwise my Mustang is stock...
No mods...

I'll give that 5mm x 8mm thing a try though.

NEW - Allen Screw For Mustang Tremolo Arms

Enter the above into Ebay and it comes up for 2.99

I bought one because of the rubber tip on it, but it didn't screw in properly into my '77 USA Mustang so I put the original back in. The new one appears to have a slightly finer thread. Not sure what thread it is but it is not for my '77.

HI
Slow response sorry
I used a 4mm drill (near enough the 3/16 tapping drill size) I think, and then i took it to work to have it tapped 3/16".
The report came back that the metal was rock hard and the tapped bit didn't go all the way through. This is to cope with the plastic pad on the end of the grub screw. They even gave me some of the old plastic bit back !.
I ended up making a grub screw by cutting the end of a screw and cutting the slot in with a saw. I used a pretty funky material screw though so i don't think it will rust in a hurry!!

I think the current reissues from Japan use a 5mm screw that will be a bit big on diameter (.24 mm) and have a slightly different thread pitch.

Hope this helps
