The '65 has a trem, and a notoriously bad one at that, so that's why it doesn't stay in tune (I only have this problem if I actually use the trem though).

Not really much use comparing them, as they are two completely different instruments. Look similar, same name, etc., but both do completely different things.

I haven't seen a Pawn Shop Mustang in person yet but according to the reviews I've read the pickups are splittable - the slide switches above the pickups do the splitting and it also has a 3-way (on an original Mustang the slide switches are on-off for each pickup).

As to the price - I suspect that primarily it was a marketing decision by Fender to set the Pawn Shop series at this price point. It might be somewhat less costly for them to build and set up the string-through bridge compared to the original Mustang bridge/trem unit.

Oh and as for the price, I'd imagine the fact that they have to make a specific, VERY unconventional trem that they only use on ONE model has at least something to do with that.

NEW QUESTION if you wouldn't mind responding: Does anyone actually own a Pawn Shop Mustang? If so, what do you think of it? Thanks.

Can't say I do, they all got bought up before I had the money and now they're apparently on back order. I did get to play one though, and holy damn was it a nice instrument! The pickups sound absolutely beautiful and I love the tonal options the switching provides.

I've had the Pawn Shop Mustang Special for a month now and I'm greatly satisfied with my purchase. I own a few Jazzmasters and my biggest complaint was the size and weight of the guitar. The smaller scale and weight is a big plus for me, what sold me are the pickup combinations you can get with the coil splitting. I play mostly on the single coils because to me the neck humbucking pickup is a little muddy. I've had a few problems with intonation but I had my local guitar tech take care of that. I did replace the knobs with metal tele knobs, the P bass knobs really take away from the appearance and makes it look cheapy. I play mostly alternate rock, salsa music and jazz. This guitar covers all genres, I never have to change my guitars in between songs. You can get a nice chunky Jazzmaster tone and with a flick of a switch you'll have that tele twang. I would love for the Custom Shop to make a guitar inspired by Pawn Shop Mustang, I would buy it in a heartbeat. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

After owning and playing a '65 Mustang for over 30 years I wouldn't give a pawnshop a sideways glance. The pawnshop is a Mustang in name only and couldn't come close to the original for vibe and versatility.I agree that the vibrato is problematic if not set up just so but having the in/out of phase options with the pickups is indispensable.

Hi, I own a USA Black Mustang Custom I think it's a '75 serial 630114.

What exactly is a pawn shop mustang? I understand a reissue 65 but haven't seen the pawn shop version mebe... mebe I have I dunno.

Anyway I love my little black mustang and as previously said by others the switching is great... a little noisey now it's such an old switch that has been well used (& abused) so not something I do while recording. It was my workhorse through 1989 - 99 when I had lotsa work playing live. Now not so much and since I have changed my style and I like change I go to my reissue slimline for my fun. :) But the Mustang comes out for recording SO FAT! (like me LOL).

Re the tuning issues, an engineer friend of mine made me two brass slip on sleaves to fit the posts of the tremolo rocker making it solid as with no screw holes or other addaptions & of course it is reversable with no damage to the mustang. True no tremolo but thats what my tremolo pedal is for :) Not the same I know but I don't go diving so isnomatter to me. & I bought the mustang cos it looked so cool and it's TONE :) Endless TONE!

Well thats my first bit for Fender, I have had a life long love affair with my fenders, I collected Fender posters too just thinking of them reminds me of my teen jam room... so cool; well I reckon anyway :) Those posters have gone with my teenage years but when I open my old Mustang case and that old case smell fills my nostrils OH JOY!

Here's a link I had posted the other day in the Mustang Amp section. Hopefully it gives you another perspective and look at the Mustang Special. I'm really happy with my Pawn Shop.

-------

For those interested in a quick little "tone clip"

This little video and ditty was recorded on a Zoom Q3HD.

My setup includes:
-Fender Pawn Shop Series Mustang Special (lovin' this guitar)
-Mustang II set to the '57 Deluxe with nothing but the '63 Reverb
-BOSS ME70 set to the TWEED PreAmp

Hope you like. I'm still dialing in my tone a little bit, but for just plugging in and playing I was pretty happy.

And here's a second link with excerpts from 4 different tunes:

Enjoy!!!

Agreed. It's one of the lightest and smallest guitars I've owned, and that's just one of my favorite things about it :) Added some really nice variety to my arsenal. Have really enjoyed both the feel and tone of it.

Thanks. Yeah, I have the 65. I don't use the trem and it still doesn't stay in tune all that well. I still love it anyway...just sayin'.

I have a 65 mustang and a Corgan USA strat (dimarzio humbuckers). I think my next guitar needs to be an American Standard Strat so I can see what that real pretty tone really is, and then the rest of my life I'll be qualified to evaluate other guitars.

I think the blue pawn shop mustang, however, is beautiful, just talking appearance.

You do know you can lock it or set it up right http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szhosCnwxBQ

I own the Pawn Shop Mustang and LOVE it. I currently have it in for a few mods, but the pickups are staying. They sound GREAT in this guitar. Love 'em.

Just got the call that my baby is done 8)

So here's a quick list of what I had done and quick pic of her on her ride back home

-New custom built and cut solid rosewood pickguard (already seen pics of how this turned out and it is beautiful - the wood grain is incredible).

-I have had the pickup selector on the bottom horn moved to where the input jack is. So it will be volume, tone and then the pickup selector. And I have had this installed at an angle so that it is an easy and clean swipe as I drop my hand down towards it.

-Since the pickup selector is now where the input jack was I am having a Strat style input jack put in.

-All of the pots and capacitors have been upgraded.

-And last but not least they are installing some nice graphite saddles and setup for 10's.

Really, really nice, David. Can you describe any changes in tone or noise or whatever that the pot and cap swap has brought about? What values for those components (ie, I could do that!)
