I Have a 1964 P bass which has been re-sprayed, and I want to get it back to the original colour. I'm thinking it was LPB, but the previous owner seems to think it was a ''Powder '' blue. Is there anyway of finding out exactly what colour it was when it was made. I cant find any chips of the original colour on the bass. Pls help!!

Unless you can find some vestiges of the original color inside the body routs, the neck pocket, or (perhaps) the back side of the neck plate, it's a crap-shoot. You might also swab out the holes for the strap buttons and see if any blue paint shows up there.

Best of luck, HTH

Thanks, I'll have a dig in a few holes to see what I can find.

If the bridge plate is original, take a close look at the reverse side of it as well.

Also bear in mind, "back in the day" many custom colors were applied over a sunburst finish that was either botched during the painting process or didn't look proper due to some anomaly in the wood itself. Thus, some of those pigment fragments may be found. AFAIK, neither Sonic Blue, Daphne Blue, nor Lake Placid Blue required any type of undercoat so if some flecks of blue show up, inspect them carefully for correct color identification.
