I've been mostly looking at Jazzmasters lately, since they have an overall fuller sound than a Jag, but I've also been entertaining the idea of getting a versatile humbucking guitar like the Parker P-series. The HH Jags kinda combine the two a bit(though I don't get the Piezo on the Parkers).

I remember seeing the look of the HH white Jag in a shop here and it was a beautiful looking guitar.

I'm curious as to how "good" it sounds. I generally prefer the sound of Single Coils over Humbuckers, but thicker single coils like a Jazzmaster or the higher output single coils you get on the regular CP Jag. There aren't many demos on Youtube, but I was impressed that it did actually manage to sound a bit like a Jag - what's cool is the coil split fader, which helps get around the problem of a pure coil split being thin sounding.

I can barely afford the guitar even second hand, but I do need a good new guitar that'll stay in tune, etc.(which I hope the CPs do), so I can't really afford to swap out pickups, at least not at first.

Would I be better off getting the regular CP Jag? I know it's anal but I don't think they look as nice, the sunburst/tort is a bit busy for me and the CAR is nice but the Olympic white is perfect. I don't want to get a J instrument as I'd specifically want the hotter/fuller pickups of the CP. However, from what I can tell the CP Jag HH has ridiculously hot pickups so they'd probably sound good coil split.

Otherwise I just might go with the Jazzmaster and make the best of it(wire the mid position to be in series so I get some humbucking action).

If someone could take clips of the HH and SS jags side by side... it'd be great :)

CPs are kind of hard to find, but the double humbucker Black Top Jags are all over. Just about every guitar store around here has at least one BT, usually a Jag. Go to the stores and try them, see what you like. I've found some of the Jags are, for lack of a better description, dull and listless, others VERY nice. Yes, I had troubles with my Black Top Jazzmaster (only one humbucker) and that may WELL have been a bad unit--the bridge was set up all wrong, it took forever to clear up intonation, there were grounding problems, etc...but pickup hum seems to be a common problem on the Jazz BT. I don't know if it is on the Jag.

The Jazz and the Jag feel different due to the different necks--I like the Jazz neck's length better--that's me.

Meanwhile I'm thrilled with my Jazz CP. If I could have just one guitar this would be the one...so far!

The BT Jags have nothing to do with a Jag except for scale length and offsetness.

I'd accept the HH Jag to some degree because of the switching system.

I was an early adopter of the Jaguar Special HH. While not a traditional Jag sound, I can attest to it's build quality and it sounds incredible. It has a sound all it's own. A very unique guitar. The MIJ Dragster pickups (Gotoh I believe) are the only factory pickups I've never had the desire to pitch. Very balanced with emphasis on the highs. The fixed bridge is very stable and it holds tune very well. I purchased mine through Sweetwater back on '05 and it arrived perfectly set up. Made by Fujigen in Japan. I highly recommend.

To be honest, yeah. The sound much fuller somehow. They sound like they'd be better for an overall alternative rock tone in some ways, got a bit more character but still plenty of balls.

Nothing but a single coil has the classic Jag or Jazz tones that made them so popular from the start. There's that beautiful chime and spank that single coils impart on the tone that a humbucker would never hope to achieve plus with the single coil layout you have the option of 2 sets of controls hence broadening your tonal possibilities.

Just heard more demos, and I actually like the sound of the HH a lot now too. I think the sliders help a lot, going somewhere between Humbucking and Coil Split probably gives you the best tone.
