Jaguars and Jazzmasters DID "catch on." Arguably, there were and are a lot more of them made (in USA, Japan and Mexico) than many other guitars.

One could realistically argue, there are many more Jaguars and Jazzmasters than many, many, many other marques and nameplates.

Realistically, once one gets beyond the Strat, Tele, Les Paul and ES-335, most other electric guitar designs "never caught on."

Behind the "Leaders of the Pack," the Jaguar and Jazzmaster are in good company, with solid, time-tested outstanding guitars like the SG, Firebird, Gretsch 6120, Flying V, Mosrite Mk I, Rickenbacker 360 and Gibson 1275 Doubleneck.

Magic!

Seriously, it isn't complicated. The three switches on the lower horn are for neck pickup, bridge pickup and low cut filter. (top to bottom) The switch on the upper horn enables neck pup only with a much more mellow "rhythm" circuit. Too deep and mellow for most.

Art nailed it.

And the "Rhythm Slider Switch" is passport to some eloquent jazz or melodic lead playing. Jaguars are fine.

I wish I had a Jaguar, lol. In time...

They definitely caught on though, there's still interest in them. They seemed to gain a lot of popularity in the late 80's~early 90's, especially with scenes like grunge, punk, shoegaze, and other forms of alt rock.

I agree...my '65 Lake Placid Blue Jag was the top of the line Fender (w/ top price!), way more than the Strats. I believe most guitarists in that era bought Strats for the price even though the Jag & JM sound was at the height of the surfing genre... Beachboys, Ventures, etc.

As far as "all those switches"...yes it is not that complicated. There is a great variety of subtle (and not so subtle) sounds that one could get especially jumping from rhythm to solo!

The bridge...take the time to set up properly. (The credit card trick to angle the neck back works perfectly!) I have had no buzzes. Set up carefully, I've had strings break mid solo and the trem-lock switch brought back to perfect pitch!

For a sample of the different types of tone on this guitar check out YouTube under Head Shop - Revolution, Sunny, I Feel Love Comin' On.

Go listen to the modern podcasts on Surf Guitar 101; new music alla the time.

If it's an eloquent, well-played, each-note-enunciated, electric guitar, there, it's a Jaguar, Jazzmaster, Mosrite or Strat.

And it's HOT.
