Who wants them to catch on? Isn't half the appeal that they are the "other" Fender, i.e. this forum has Strat and Tele sections and then the ones for the alternative kids.

I would rather it stayed cult because it suits the sound perfectly.

The jag simply couldn't compete with the strat's looks and popularity when introduced. If you could afford only one, the strat usually was the one of choice. I have several strats, but can't wait to be able to purchase the right jag. I love them too.

Why didn't the Jaguar get more of a following back in the day and carve out its own solid nitch in guitar land?

Thinking about it now, it seems that the 24" scale would be a better choice for a lot of folks with smaller hands than a strat or tele. Did those folks just go to Gibson instead? Why didn't the Jaguar catch on?

The Jaguar IS a very nice guitar - for some of us. But it's not for everyone.
The bridge receives a lot of criticism. If you're not mechanically inclined - it can be a nightmare. But if you are mechanically inclined, and do most of your own work (probably 'cause we like to  ), once you have it figured out, it's no longer a problem. And actually is pretty good. It offers a lot of adjustment flexiblity. And when it's right - it's great! (just lock it down, at that point, with some clear fingernail polish  ) If you don't like it, you can alway replace it with a Mustang bridge.

Some people don't like the mute. But it's simple enough to take off. (and please store it in the case for later use, when you find that you want to try it after all  )

The switching arrangment is a plus - FOR ME :D (and IMHO  )

I like my Jag - but prefer my Jazzmaster. (which has the same bridge BTW)

But many, many guitar players are ultra traditional and want to stay in the "main stream". Which accounts for the popularity of the Strats and Teles.

Bottom line - play what you like and feel comfortable with. You'll play better and have more fun doing it. After all, making music is what it's all about - right?

I don't like Jags and Mustangs because they're "odd Fenders".... I just think Strats are ugly as hell.... >_>

Just goes to show you can't account for taste and opinion.
And IMHO, nothing is more emblematic of Rock'n'Roll than a Stratocaster and a Precision Bass.

Does anyone really prefer the 24" scale over 25.5"?

Didn't catch on?

I must have been living in a different world. Saying Jaguars never caught on is like saying Buicks never caught on in the car market. Jaguars and jazzmasters were staples of surf music as well as common in early rock.

Go to many pre 1965 clips of bands playing and you will see Jaguars.

after the early 60's Jaguars were left in the dust by Stratocasters but so were every other make of guitar. When I got my first Strat in 1971 it wasn't even a question of what to get if you had the money...we all got Strats. However, my oldest brother got his first guitar in 1965...a Jaguar.

If you ask why 'recent' Jaguars haven't caught on, that's a different issue.

Short scale? I never even notice after playing my Jaguar or other short scale guitars for 2 minutes.

Another reason Jaguars didn't catch on originally was the cost.In the 60s the Jaguar was even more than the Jazzmaster making it the most expensive of the Fender line.People saw that they could get a Strat with 3 pickups and a better vibrato system for over $100 less so they gave the Jaguar a wide berth.

Now, Jaguars, Jazzmasters and Mustangs are for the people who want something different, for whatever reason.

Strats and Teles are what people think when you say "Fender", like Les Pauls and SGs are what they think of when you say "Gibson". Iconic guitars.

But what is more retro-slick than a Vintage or Classic Play Jaguar with chrome all over ?

For a Strat to say "retro" it has to be a bright color like mint green or mustard yellow, but not fire engine red.

Jaguars and Jazzmasters are just, well, different. You like the look...or you don't.

I played a Tele for two decades. I've got a -45dB notch in my in my right ear at 4k to prove it. In 2005 I switched to a Jaguar Special HH precisely because of the scale length (small hands). I'm a slow learner I guess.

This is completely unscientific, but I agree that the initial cost was the main reason and the complex switching a close second. I really miss my simple three-way selector. I suppose I could get a Blacktop, but the MIM thing bugs me. For me, MIJ is where it's at. YMMV.

I think I might like to try a Pawn Shop Special Mustang though. I dig the three-way switch on those.
