Why didn't the Jaguar get more of a following back in the day and carve out its own solid nitch in guitar land?

Thinking about it now, it seems that the 24" scale would be a better choice for a lot of folks with smaller hands than a strat or tele. Did those folks just go to Gibson instead? Why didn't the Jaguar catch on?

It's several pounds heavier than a Strat or Tele, the short scale had limited player appeal, the switching system is overly complex, and the bridge is junk.

It had great visual vibe though.

Why did it weigh so much? Was it the wood choice?

What masw the bridge junk?

I'm surprised about the limited appeal of the 24" scale, it doesn't seem that far from a Gibson scale which has plenty of player appeal.

Jazzmaster has many of the same issues, though it has the longer scale neck.
Currently the bridge on the Blacktop Jazzmaster is junk but the electronics are dead simple, if they work right.

However, my new Classic Player Jazzmaster has a much nicer, solider bridge than the BT and while the electronics are a bit weird, it's capable of all kinds of tonal qualities, and has no flaws I can find.

Jazz and Jags are truly siblings, each with their appeal. But the Jazz/Jag body says "retro" in a way Strats and Teles don't despite their being older designs. That either appeals to people or it doesn't. Me? I love the design.

There's also an after-market bridge by "Mystery" (I think) that's supposed to be a drop-in for Jags and Jazzmasters that's supposed to really clean up issues.

Offsets aren't always that heavy. The reason they're heavier is simply that the bodies are slightly larger. If you look at the GFS mini-JMs they're about the same weight as a Strat.

The new Classic Players aren't very heavy, only 1-2lbs heavier than a Strat I believe(8 as opposed to 6) as opposed to a Les Paul which can easily be double the weight of a Strat. THe blacktops I think are somewhere in between. They're no heavier than Teles really. My Tele copy is definitely at least as heavy as the CP I tried.

See I have no problem with the weight because I play an aluminum necked Kramer and I'm looking at an all aluminum guitar.... THAT s*** is heavy

Because people saw Jimi playing and wanted strats, or at least that contributed.

He played a Jazzmaster during the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, etc... period.

They were #$@*&!% expensive too. Electronics in general are much cheaper to produce nowadays.

Who wants them to catch on? Isn't half the appeal that they are the "other" Fender, i.e. this forum has Strat and Tele sections and then the ones for the alternative kids.

I would rather it stayed cult because it suits the sound perfectly.

I think they make enough money to have the Jag as an underdog, and i would like to think that some people at Fender don't think about everything in terms of money and shifting units, more to have their guitars fitting nicely into niches and such.
I'm having difficulty finding the words, but i'm just another guy with an opinion about guitars.
