Well, how fast it happens will definitely depend on how well you take care of your guitar and what kind of music you play. But the answer is yes, it will get a little worn. That may take some time however, plus it'll add to the mojo imo. I've seen a few on some strats and really dug them!

Chrome is much, much harder than stainless steel and much harder to scratch. All stainless takes on a worn look after much use, whatever it is, from a cooking pot to a pocket knife to your pick guard.

Yanktar is right. If you're gonna do it, go chrome. I had a Schecter chrome scratch plate on my '84 Tele for about 15 years. I am an aggressive rhythm player and as such, it took a lot of abuse. It shows the scratches but only at certain angles when it catches the light just right. Otherwise, it is still really reflective and looks awesome on stage. When I sold the guitar, I reinstalled the original white guard, and I still have the Schecter plate for posterity. Loved that guitar!
