Greetings All....

First post here in this fine community. I've lurked for a while...glad to be here!

My question is about the tremolo mount area on this particular '71 body. Is it normal to have a recessed area (lower than the surface of the guitar face) for the tremolo plate to reside in? I've taken a lot of Mustangs apart back in the day and don't recall this as normal.

Obviously this particular guitar has been heavily routed and modified for pickups. It's messy and sloppy. I wouldn't doubt for a second that the owner would have worked on the trem area as well, but it looks too clean...almost factory like.

I happen to have a '67 laying around...it's tremolo mounting area is flat...no lower than the guitar surface.

This guitar most likely was a red competition model without matching headstock. I see what looks like remnants of CA red paint in various places. The neck is pretty nice with original decal. Definitely worth putting back together : )

Thoughts?

I don't think it was ever intended to be "recessed" like that. Here is what I think has happened to your particular guitar. Someone stripped the finish down to the bare wood to stain it, and when mounting the bridge plate without a finish to help stiffen the area, then when the screws were tightened, and over time and heavy use, the bridge plate simply compressed into wood. It doesn't look machined in any way.

Thank you Steve for your reply. This is an odd guitar for sure!

Unless you just love that old, stained, pirate ship look it has now, you should just refinish it! A refinish now won't detract from the value, since it was a home-brew job it has now. Do a good job on it, and it will look better, and if you go to sell it, being pretty sure won't make it hard to move! ;)

There's another reason why he might've recessed the vibrato plate. He may have shaved a bit off the back of the neck butt of the guitar and that brought tha action down way too low so he recessed the bridge to compensate.
