As I am still far away from getting a guitar, I've been having my doubts on the "desicion" I made with the Jaguar HH. Now I'm looking at the Tele 72 Deluxe. While both strike my fancy in looks and functionability, I just want to get some feedback from players of both guitars. (The Jaguar looks better but thats because I don't like maple necks. Rosewood all the way!)

I have the MIJ jag special hh and love it (as i have often said on the boards) i am not saying that either would be a mistake. I think really the only way you will really know is to play each of them a little. maybe play them both a little on 2 or 3 different occasions and see which one sounds and feels best to you. Personally i think the Jaguar special HH's are one of the most beautiful, functional and great sounding guitars on the planet. Again, i am not bashing the Tele the jag is just my personal preference.

And I completely agree with you! Unfortunately, my local Guitar Center is the only place that I really have around here that is an authorized Fender dealer. But they never have the Jaguar in stock. I would have to order it to see what it feels like. Same with the Tele. So I guess thats what I'll have to do. :/

A telecaster feels entirely different than a Jaguar. For me, getting high up on the neck, 12 fret and beyond, is pretty easy on all the Jag BTs I've tried, very tough on the Tele, and easiest on Jazzmasters. You MIGHT like the new Mustang Pawnshop...it's like a Swiss Army Knife with 15 (by my count) different pup settings, all sounding different than each other. It's a smaller form than the Jag, certainly than the Jazzmaster

While far from an "expert opinion", I have experience with all three and can tell you, they are all very different animals. I owned and played an '84 Tele pretty much exclusively for nearly two decades. While I miss it very much, I parted with it in order to fund a Jaguar Special HH. I also own a Competition Mustang. I did this merely to achieve better playability with the short scale length due to my small hands. If your hand size is not an issue, then it really comes down to sound.

The classic Tele w/single coils is about as bright and snappy as guitars get in the bridge position, with warmer, glassy bell-like tones in the neck position. The Jag HH can achieve bright sounds also in bridge position with the lead circuit (but not as biting as the Tele), fuller, warmer tones with the neck position, and very mellow and very warm jazzy tones with the rhythm circuit. The Jag HH is the most versatile guitar I have ever owned, with the Mustang a close second. My Mustang is a very warm sounding guitar also in the neck position because I have a Duncan Quarter Pound Flat in the neck, and full on Punk Rock crunch due to a Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge. Out of phase positions allow for thinner, brighter options when I need them. I love the 'stang in this regard, as it is quite versatile too. I expect the Pawn Shop Mustang to be even more versatile. Just know that the stock single coil pickups on a standard Mustang are fairly bland to my ears. They are pretty bright and not very full sounding, which is why I changed them out for the Duncans. This of course adds to your cost. A Pawn Shop with the humbuckers, even at $800, is still cheaper than a brand new '65 reissue Mustang, with aftermarket pickups.

The '72 Tele Deluxe with humbuckers won't sound anything like my Tele with single coils, so I have no idea how to compare it. I have never played it. I expect, since it is alder, it will sound similar to the Jag HH in the lead circuit. Just guessing here since they have differently voiced humbuckers.

So to sum up, if you play mainly rock, the Tele will suffice, but the Jag HH or a modded Mustang or Pawn Shop Mustang would give you the most variety for your money, especially if you can only afford to own one guitar. The Jag is alder and, my Mustang is basswood. If you are bothered at all by weight, then the Mustang is the clear choice. The necks on my Jag and Mustang have a nearly identical feel, and are very comfortable. The Tele, with it's longer scale length takes much more hand strength to play, and requires longer fingers for four and five fret stretches.

Lastly, if this matters to you, the Jag Special HH and the Mustangs are all made in Japan. I'm not sure where the '72 Tele is made, but I would guess Mexico. This is comletely subjective, but in my experience, the Mexican Fenders seem to have a reputation for less consistent quality control than the Japanese guitars FWIW.

Any of these guitars would be excellent choices. You just need to decide what sounds, looks, and scale length you most prefer. As always, YMMV.

Hope this helps.

I'd go for the Tele, there's something about the Tele's style that really makes it look classy with humbuckers.I'm so used to seeing Jags with single coils-I've owned one for 35 years-that one with humbuckers appears odd to me and I can't see it as a true Jaguar.

Does Seymour Duncan still make the hotrails? They don't take up that much room.
